Go to 'Jekyll and Hyde', somewhere around 57th and 6th Avenue. It's scary!

I live in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and can tell you it's the next frontier. Todd P. was the man, but has since taken a break from booking awesome shows.
Check out the corner of Greenpoint Ave. and Franklin Ave. if you're looking for a hipster hot spot. There are several great bars around there : Lost & Found, Coco 66, plus a great indie clothing store called "Alter," "Word" book store, "permanent records" record shop down the street....it's the new happening joint in the ever changing neighborhoods of brooklyn. |

I played The Cake Shop, Shin-e and Pianos on the lower east side in the space of four days with my old band......to the total of about 8 people....Nice venues though...no backline (if anyone is ino a band and thinking of playing though)
I gathered that most of the interesting music scene stuff was going on in Brooklyn. Defo get a taxi from JFK cos the view of the city get closer will live with me till i die. It didn't compute i was their until i walked down a street on my own. Hostels in th eLower East Side were good quality. Wish i'd seen more. Want to go back.... |

In New York if you go to the lower east side, Ludlow Street etc you can't really go wrong. I'd advise keeping away from the meatpacking district - it's a Very Serious Business, hip hop clubs, hookers etc..

I've just gone and booked myself a trip to New York - 2-9 November, election week. I've never been before, and it's daunting AND exciting.
I'm looking for somewhere to stay as well - I'm buzzing around the Y-M-C-A website at the moment, which just about sums up my budget. Any tips would be massively appreciated. |

Yo!
Me and the missus have finally booked a trip to NYC. We're going from London and my girlfriend's sister and her fella are going from Melbourne and we're meeting there, which makes it even better. Not going till September but already beyond excited. We're pretty chuffed with the accomodation we found and I thought some info might be useful for others. Hotels in NYC are famously tiny and expensive so for about the same money we got an kind of apartment in the East Village. Obviously costs more than a hostel or YMCA or whatever but it works out pretty reasonable compared to a hotel if you can split the cost four ways. It's got a bedroom, a living room with a fold out bed and a kitchen so you get a lot more for your buck. http://secondhomesecondavenue.com |

Sounds cool - toying with going back there myself later this year...
if anyone finds it useful, I stayed at The Jane in the West Village - http://www.thejanenyc.com/ - $99/night (plus myriad taxes). Odd little place but terrific value. |

The Jane looks cool actually I think. Odd, yeah, but more fun than a souless Travel Tavern I guess.
Anyway - beeen meaning to say that the place I recomended, Second Home On Second Avenue, said they couldn't actually take our booking in the end. The whispers on Trip Advisor forums are that they didn't have all the licences and stuff they needed to offer an 'apartment' rather than just 'hotel rooms'. Or something like that. We were looking at renting an actual apartment rather than an apartment style room in a hotel. There are companies you can go through to do this, but it's a bit of a legal minefeild. There are apparently a lot of scams and even genuine rentals are probably illegal (as far as I can gather, even if you own it you're not allowed to rent out your apartment for less than 30 days). So, we're now looking at a similar 1 bedroom/sofa bed/kitchen kinda set up at Radio City Apartments, which looks good and reasonable cost by the time you've split it four ways and factor in that you can cook rather than eating out every night.
