Title: KWSG Mission 002: 40k - Servant Of The Machine God
Flame of Udun - July 18, 2006 11:03 PM (GMT)
Well here we are, Mission 2 already! In case you hadn't got the idea already this week your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to produce a character study/portrait of a Tech Priest or other servant of the Omnissiah. So, whether its a Magos Biologis examining his latest specimen or an Enginseer perfoming a spot of battlefield triage to a Leman russ just let your imagination run riot.
My suggestion is though, keep your concept to just a character study/ portrait type piece, it doesn't need to be a battle scene or whatever, just keep focused on your character.
So brethren you have your mission, Go forth and create in the name of the divine Omnissiah!
I look forward to see what you guys have got :)
Brother Captain Flame of the Deathwatch

YES! Reason for me to draw a techmarine and stick with it! Woo! Thank you thank you thank you. And..even better. I got a black prismacolor marker today so I can outline it and then color it with colored pencil. Time to try it out. Well..after the sketching process of course. This one will be fun.
Stugmeister - July 18, 2006 11:24 PM (GMT)
I must let my mind ponder upon this.....
Flame of Udun - July 18, 2006 11:29 PM (GMT)
Hey warrick, glad to be of service! Look forward to seeing your techmarine :)
markay - July 18, 2006 11:55 PM (GMT)
this one sounds a good one, definitely be having a go at this and look forward to seeing the cool stuff other people are going to do :D
Stugmeister - July 19, 2006 11:27 AM (GMT)
Right, well I think I've got my basic sketch down now. I'll hopefully be able to post it up soonish. If not tonight then maybe tomorrow.
I wanted to go for something a bit different - much like how I did my BFG pic for the Daemonic Attack mission; but it looks like it'll be pretty standard...
Oh well, there's still time to come up with something else if I think it's not gonna work.
How's everybody else getting along?
StormCrow - July 19, 2006 11:56 AM (GMT)
I'd like to give it a go, but i don't know where to go to get some good example pics of what enginseers look like. Zooming in close on a low quality techpriest on dawn of war just isn't cutting it.
Any links would be handy thanks

All Techpriests and members of the Adeptus Mechanicus don't really have a standard uniform.
I'd say make a few sketches of what you think a TechPriest/TechMarine/ElectroPriest/Skitarri looks like in your mind's eye.
Warrick - July 19, 2006 03:11 PM (GMT)
Okay here is what I have of my Techmarine so far. I am thinking of putting either a razorback, rhino, or land raider crusader in ffront of him so he is like..looking it over on how to repair it. and then maybe he is in a workshop or something. Anyways the other thing I need help on is a chapter..what chapter do you think I should make him? And anything you want to comment on please do.
Warrick
P.S. I have my new prismacolor marker and I am telling myself not to ink him yet to wait and get your opinions so quick give me C and C! before I ink it.

Ixajin - July 19, 2006 04:44 PM (GMT)
Warrik: Good start. The one thing that stands out is the arms. The upper arms look too long and the lower arms look too short. The over all length of the arms look good, just the upper and lower arms appear out of propotion.
Warrick - July 19, 2006 04:46 PM (GMT)
Ya..I see what you mean. the elbow pad should be just under the shoulder pad. Thanks for telling me I'll ge to it.
MIGHTYPanhead - July 19, 2006 05:25 PM (GMT)
another 5-10 min. sketch, will also be colouring this one :)

it's a "character" that I've done before, as a rogue priest, so, perhaps this is before he turned. meh, I just like the cable-face :P (which will be dark by the way, didn't want to colour it with pencils  )
here's the older sketch of him:

it's also the first time I've used a pencil crayon before pencil, it helped my linework a lot. though, it doesn't help with the normal style I use. but hey, doesn't mean I can't try both!
*edit*
here he is after a quick colour-job:
Warrick - July 19, 2006 05:41 PM (GMT)
Man thats cool! Love the cable face. The idea of a rogue priest is cool too. He might know the plans for some secret titan or something and they don't want the info to get into the wrong hands..oo. Well thats just my opinion but the coloring is coming along very nicely. :)
markay - July 19, 2006 06:02 PM (GMT)
I like it so far, was going to say before you posted the colour picture that he looks kind of cute with his wide bright eyes :P Thats no longer the case, he looks much darker now. Only thing I would say is about the marine in the background, his legs seem a little (for want of a better word) wrong. Sweet boltgun though and impressive servo arm and axe on the techpriest too.
MIGHTYPanhead - July 19, 2006 06:06 PM (GMT)
Thanks! Glad you two like him!
yeah, the marines legs are well, wrong... but, at least you can see why i didn't finish them, no? :P
colouring may fix them up, but I may just leave them as-is, to save some brain trauma ;)
anyways, more colouring, most of the red is done now:

*edit*
more work done, cloth is basically done, maybe a few touch-ups
Commissar Molotov - July 19, 2006 06:48 PM (GMT)
I can't actually see a single picture in this thread. Photobucket isn't working at the moment, it seems.
Warrick - July 19, 2006 07:21 PM (GMT)
You can't see them? I can see all of them...are you sure its not a computer problem?
Oh ya and Panhead the coloring on that rogue servitor is awesome! The way the cords fade into his face is really well shaded and the robe color is a good nuetral color under all that red.
Flame of Udun - July 19, 2006 07:22 PM (GMT)
I'm having exactly the same problem.
@ StormCrow. For inspiriation!
Jes Goodwin Enginseer conceptHoff's Admech Project at Warseeralso try googling Adeptus mechanicus and Tech priests and you should get some hits :)
markay - July 19, 2006 08:06 PM (GMT)
Oh thank you so much Flame! I saw those ages ago and forgot to bookmark them, then forgot were i found them and got all upset :P
Flame of Udun - July 19, 2006 08:16 PM (GMT)
Not at all mate :)
I have to say it's great too see so many of you guys jumping in on this topic!
Also can I suggest that for the moment people host their images at
Image Shack as it looks like there are some problems with Photobucket that are affecting some members.
Ixajin - July 19, 2006 08:22 PM (GMT)
The left side of his hood looks a little flat to me. Other then that it looks great. How are you doing the coloring?
Warrick - July 19, 2006 09:57 PM (GMT)
Okay I am using imageshack on this one. Unfortunately the digital camera is in Hawaii with my dad so I had to use my scanner. The red got really messed up...I don't know why but it did when I scanned it. But what do ya think so far? I still have to come up with a background.
Commissar Molotov - July 19, 2006 10:29 PM (GMT)
Thanks, Warrick. Actually photobucket seems to have re-worked itself. It's still a little annoying, though. Panhead - I really like your ideas. With regards to the Space Marine in the background - put a waist-high wall in the way! ;)
Warrick: I actually like it - he seems a huge improvement on your last drawing I saw (your Tau commander). How're your markers working out for you? From a realistic standpoint, I think you could do with your marines being a bit broader, but it's a really nice start.
MIGHTYPanhead - July 19, 2006 11:28 PM (GMT)
@ ixain: yeah, the hood has been bothering me since i first put colour to it, but, I'm not going to beat myself up on it, just doing it casually, not too picky about mistakes/shortcomings. :)
I'm using Photoshop 7 to colour it. But, with a mouse (the pain!) ;)
@ molotov: I like your idea! (must be the lazy in me.. :P ) Next time i do some on this, you should see a wall in place. :)
Stugmeister - July 19, 2006 11:29 PM (GMT)
Hey guys,
Here's a pic that I've been working on-and-off for the past few years. I suddenly remembered I had it on my Mac and thought how great it'd be for this mission.
Rest assured though, I am still working on another image too - specifically for this thread!

PS: If you think this image is too big then I can have it as a thumbnail instead?
Warrick - July 20, 2006 12:38 AM (GMT)
Thanks Molotov. I love my new prismacolor marker. The only one I bought was black so I could outline. The rest is colored pencil. 1 red 1 orange 1 grey 2 greens 2 blues. A brown and a yellow. But the prismacolor marker doesn't leave that red/balck kinda color in the recess like in the Tau Commander picture. (you can't really see it in the picture but now the picture is really red) The prismacolor marker stays black.
I agree that the marine could be bulkier. His boots were okay but his arms are not thick enough like you said. The wall would be a good idea. Maybe I can make the wall a door..or something. But thanks for getting me started on it.
Commissar Molotov - July 20, 2006 01:04 AM (GMT)
The wall was a comment to Panhead, but if it helps you, by all means use it. I'm glad the marker is helping you out though.
Stug, I like what you've going on, though he doesn't seem very bionic to me! :)
MIGHTYPanhead - July 20, 2006 01:54 AM (GMT)
no wall, but I messed with contrasts/etc to betterise the picture.

thoughts? personally I love it!
@ stug: looks nice! :) the only thing that sticks out is the texture on the cloth, a bit too uniform... but, that would be an arduous task by hand to fix :P
looking foreward to the second one!
Warrick - July 20, 2006 02:06 AM (GMT)
Molotov: sorry thought it was directed at me.
Panhead: That looks even better then before. The left side of the cape still seems a little flat. Of course you look at my picture and the red is flat too...but just saying I think you did really well with the right side of the hood but the one spot that I mentioned doesn't have any of that darker toned red in it.
Ixajin - July 20, 2006 03:28 AM (GMT)
Panhead: completely understandable, i do like how it is coming along.
Warrick: The coloring is coming along nicely.

yeah, that's another of the things that's been bugging me, I'll most likely add a munch of shading to particular folds, I guess it was made light as that's where the imaginary light source was... but, you're right, it does need more definition
though, I'll most likely botch it half way ;)
*edit* and for the record, your red is much much less flat than mine :P
Warrick - July 20, 2006 05:01 AM (GMT)
Yes that what I meant You are using much more shades which is much better. Mine sucks. Which is why I need more then one color of red. Again I apoligise for making it lookk like your red was the same quality of mine...I didn't mean for it to sound that way but I guess it did. Keep up the good work Mighty.
Ursca - July 20, 2006 10:48 AM (GMT)
Here's a WIP of mine:

A massive Fabricator General. He's going to have loads of Mechadendrites when he's finished.
I think this one's going into my Ad-mech procession thingy...
I'm going on holiday tomorrow afternoon, so it should be finished soon!
Warrick - July 20, 2006 01:38 PM (GMT)
Whoa, thats cool. I love the guy in fronts skull face, it makes him look very important. The shading is good on the red. I love the way you shaded the skull though. The colors you used to shade it are very realistic *thumbs up*
Flame of Udun - July 20, 2006 05:11 PM (GMT)
Wow, I've got to say thats there's some great work coming through here! I'm short for time so I'll get some proper crit up later but everyone is doing a sterling job and Warrick your piece does not suck so don't start thinking like that. I like it, I think it needs some work but its still a really good effort :)
Commissar Molotov - July 20, 2006 08:23 PM (GMT)
Ursca, I can't help but think 'Necron' when I see that guy's skull. I know some like the hints that the AdMech are secretly worshipping the C'Tan, but I think it might need to be tweaked to be a little less Necron. That's just my taste, though. It's up to you in the end.
Ursca - July 20, 2006 09:48 PM (GMT)
I was going for a similar head to something I've seen in another picture. I think perhaps it was in the 40k rulebook. I need to make some tweaks to the head, so I'll see what I can do.
Incidently, if anyone needs a bit of inspiration, there's some really nice Ad-mech pictures in
this article.
Commissar Molotov - July 20, 2006 10:47 PM (GMT)

Something random I did in a few minutes to keep Flame happy ;)
Stugmeister - July 21, 2006 12:12 AM (GMT)
Hi guys,
Here's another pic from me. Just a quickie - I still need to do a lot more to it but it's rather late at the mo - time for bed!
calamity - July 21, 2006 02:06 PM (GMT)
This is my concept, it depicts an imperial guard sergeant, who has come round after horrific injuries to find himself connected deep within the bowels of a chaos titan in his new roll as a servitor, this was inspired by the forge world chaos warhound interior.

will try and finish this one :D
