Title: Competition One: "Ordo Illuminatus"
Commissar Molotov - June 17, 2006 02:41 AM (GMT)
Okay, here we go. This is as new for Tiberius and I as it is for you guys. Don't hesitate to ask any stupid questions you might have.
| QUOTE |
'It has always been the case within the Inquisition that differing philosophies and interepretations have held differing levels of influence among individual Inquisitors. The agents of the Inquisition seem to naturally polarise, associating and banding together with others who share their views and beliefs. In this way, differences of opinion can quickly become political factions. The popularity (and therefore influence) of philosophies can vary greatly depending on the times. Whilst certain philosophies are widely accepted and followed, such as the Monodominance or Amalathianism, others are only supported and defended by a small group of Inquisitors who believe whole-heartedly in their cause.
Such is the case with the Ordo Illuminatus, founding in .M35 by Inquisitor Korin Merusias. Those Inquisitors who subscribe to Merusian philosophy suffer skepticism, scorn and sometimes worse. But they gladly endure such trials - for theirs is a vital task. It is well-known that the warp is a hellish domain, inhabited by all manner of monsters and daemons. It is said that to gaze upon such creatures is to be driven mad by the certain knowledge of your damnation. It is also known that daemons constantly claw at the boundaries between their world and ours, seeking out the vulnerable minds of unsanctioned psykers and using the untapped power of their minds to try to force their way into realspace.
The psykers' vulnerable minds are exposed to a myriad of nightmarish scenes and images, for they commune with intelligences far older - and far greater - than their own. Many of these tortured souls have been documented attempting to rid themselves of their torment - through literature and, occasionally, through art. These heretics are known by the Merusians as 'the illuminated'.
Much is made of heretical texts captured by the Inquisition, but along with books, Inquisitors often encounter frenzied sketches, blood-spattered drawings, arcane sculptures and idols, even hideous paintings. To an Inquisitor with the adequate protection, any of these can provide a vital insight into the warp.
The Merusians are seen as a radical philsophy within the Inquisition - Tales abound of them kidnapping powerful psykers and inviting daemons to commune with them, in order that they might provide them with clues to combat the powers of the warp and better protect the Imperium.
It is suggested that they even maintain cavernous libraries filled with heretical artwork - paintings daubed with archaic runes, possessed statues, drawings that shift and twist on the page, all carefully studied and catalogued. One fanciful tale maintains that the Merusians dismantled the palace of Salath the Destroyer, rebuilding it brick-by-brick on another world, pain-stakingly reconstructing the enormous mosaics that adorned every surface.
The Merusians also pay close attention to the prophets and visionaries of the Imperial cult - the cathedrals and paraphenalia of the Ecclesiarchy are adorned with many extravagant pieces of artwork. Some in the Merusian philsophy study these carefully for signs the Emperor is interacting with and guiding humanity in an attempt to discover the Emperor's plans for humanity. Other Merusians investigate the interaction between the real-world and the warp in different ways - through contact with the psykers of the Eldar, study of the Tyranid's ability to cast a shadow in the warp, the Tau's apparent lack of psykers - even the innate psychic abilities of the Orkoid horde.
The Merusians have clashed with puritanical Inquisitors on many occasions - it is said that they toy with powers beyond their comprehension; that such arcane lore should be destroyed. The Merusians contend that they perform a vital task in defending the Imperium. Despite calls from influential Inquisitors to investigate and if necessary eradicate the 'Ordo Illuminatus', the Merusians have remained stubbornly persistent in their actions. Only time will tell if they shelter the Imperium from the coming storm or cast it down in ashes.' |
Your task:
To enter the competition, you must design and draw a picture of an Inquisitor of the Merusian philosophy. Use your imagination and go crazy - don't be restricted by what 40k codices show you. This Inquisitor should be representative of your persona. Perhaps you're a musician, so the picture will include some sort of musical instrument somewhere. Use your imagination.
You have a large scope for interpretation here, as Merusians are eclectic and very individual. Your drawings could include captured psykers, retinues, daemonic sculptures, possessed paintings with daemons reaching through...
You have two weeks to produce the finished article - that's Saturday, July 1st 2006. You may post WIP images in the Warhammer 40,000 Artwork forum. Finished pictures may be either coloured or black-and-white and sent to Commissar Molotov, either using the PM function, or by emailing him at songbirdsandswitchblades@hotmail.com.
Any questions?
Commissar Molotov - June 17, 2006 03:10 AM (GMT)
Be sure to post here with your statement of intent to participate - just so we know some people are actually going to take part. ;)

"Ah, finished..." *drawn daemon reaches through monitor and steals soul*
Anyways, I'm in. I've got an Inquisitor on DI who I think has an ideology he can work with. :P
Also, will there be a provision in this competition for those of us who cannot color their own images?
MIGHTYPanhead - June 17, 2006 04:00 AM (GMT)
indeed. Although I can work photoshop, without a tablet it's excruciating :(
*starts mumbling to self about entry* :ph43r:
Cpt_Tiberius - June 17, 2006 04:48 AM (GMT)
If color is not your forte' then I guess we can let that slide, though at least give it a shot if you can. :)
Captain Seato - June 17, 2006 05:49 AM (GMT)
I'd probably down a few shots before I gave it a try. :P
Flame of Udun - June 17, 2006 02:14 PM (GMT)
Cool, count me in! Also perhaps it should be stated that it doesn't have to be digital art only, I mean you can still colour your art using traditional methods. Or have a separate black & white category?

Well, if Aerion takes part I imagine he'd colour his picture using markers like he normally does. But yes, you can do pretty much whatever you like to your picture; use whatever media you're comfortable with.
MIGHTYPanhead - June 17, 2006 03:09 PM (GMT)
well, I'll take a stab at colouring it....
not promising anything grand though :P
I've made a good start on an entry too, the Illuminatus sound a lot like the Horadrim to me, I'll post some WIP's in a bit. :ph43r:

Well, one thing I considered whilst writing the background for the Ordo Illuminatus is that the word illuminati couldn't be used - it already has a specific 40k connotation. You can see the world 'illuminated', but not 'illuminati'. That's why those of the Ordo Illuminatus are known as Merusians, after their founder.
But yes - colouring isn't required - do whatever you're comfortable. A stunning black and white picture might well garner more votes than an average coloured picture. :)

Sorry I didn't think to have that clarified before hand. As a general rule, unless we specifically state that you have to use a particular medium, all are acceptable.
As for a seperate B&W category, that isn't really neccesary on this event. My initial intent was to require colored images so that participants would invest more energy into the piece beyond just a doodle. However I removed the requirement as to not alienate those who are still getting into art and are not as confident in there abilities.
Having said that, I would like to see as many as can at least try to add color to their image. Don't be afraid to try something you haven't done before, that's all a part of learning. :)
the_balloon_dog - June 18, 2006 03:51 PM (GMT)
yeah just chipping in with my intent... ;)
Cpt_Tiberius - June 18, 2006 04:09 PM (GMT)

I'm not stalled, just slow... :P
Actually I made some progress last night, however my scanner here at the house will not scan an image this big, so you'll have to wait until I can finish the rendering stage, so I can take it to work and use the scanner there.

Size isn't everything, you know... ^_^
alex - June 22, 2006 07:30 PM (GMT)
hopefully I will have learnt to do stuff in photoshop by then. Like colour.
Flame of Udun - June 25, 2006 04:47 PM (GMT)
Since Aerion has posted some fluff for his piece are we allowed to submit similar descriptions to go along with our own entries?
Cpt_Tiberius - June 25, 2006 04:54 PM (GMT)
Of course! :) You're more than welcome to do it now, or once you post the completed piece. It's really up to you.
Commissar Molotov - June 25, 2006 11:19 PM (GMT)
One request, please - when you PM your Inquisitor to me, please tell me the Inquisitor's name! It'll help me out. I know a few from what I've picked up - Inquisitor Illustrium is Aerion's, Inquisitor Sky is StormCrow's... still, let me know because it'll help me later on.
calamity - June 26, 2006 10:58 AM (GMT)
I think I'll jump straight in on this one :D , and def have a run at it although time is short. Isn't it always :D
hoping ill be able to submit something,
Calamity
Commissar Molotov - June 26, 2006 11:03 AM (GMT)
Well, welcome to the board, Calamity. Be sure to introduce yourself in the Welcome Mat, up top. You have until Saturday to PM me your finished piece of work... you certainly enjoy a challenge... ;)
Commissar Molotov - June 29, 2006 03:31 AM (GMT)
I've received:
Inquisitor Nikolai Illustrium - Aerion the Faithful
Inquisitor Engem Cerstan - Ixajin
Inquisitor Khanduras - MIGHTYPanhead
Inquisitor Juarez - Alex
Inquisitor Perconele - Calamity
Nine Breaker's pulled out as he won't be able to finish in time, but he has promised to finish the Inquisitor later.
By my understanding, entries are still outstanding from:
Captain Seato
Commissar Molotov
Cpt_Tiberius
Flame of Udun
Ophidicus
StrormCrow
The_Balloon_Dog
How's everyone doing?
StormCrow - June 29, 2006 04:11 AM (GMT)
its going to be a tight squeeze but i should be able to finish in time
heres to hoping
Flame of Udun - June 29, 2006 05:40 PM (GMT)
I'm roughly 90% done but have been tied up with real world crap :(
I should have it finished for Saturday though.
Anyway here's a bit of fluff for you. :)
My Inquisitors name is Nobutada Ryozushi, he hails from the planet of Neohjin, the principle system in the Dogon sector of Segmentum Obscurus. Neohjin was originally settled in 348.M22. by a cult of warriors from the Eastern Asian block on Terra who were looking to re-establish the ways of the ancient Samurai. The world was rediscovered by the Emperor himself and embraced within the fledgling Imperium during the First Great Crusade. The Shogun Hondo Yokozumi recognised the Emperor as the Divine Okami of legend.
Inquisitor Nobutada Ryozushi was originally inducted into the Ordo Malleus and notably led the Grey Knights of Justicar Bede in the purgation of the defiled temple of Heiadoko during the chaos uprising of 998.M41 on the planet of San Jimenez. Although he still is principally affiliated with the Ordo Malleus but has become increasingly involved in the Ordo Illuminatus and has spent much time in recent years studying the core Merusian philosophies. He is currently investigating the ancient ruins of Annaswaek and the mysterious artefact known as the Branathame Arc.
Cpt_Tiberius - June 29, 2006 11:36 PM (GMT)
I've run into some RL commitments that are slowing me down. Looking at what I have left I'm just not sure I can get it done by the first. I may be a few days late so don't wait on me.
