This could be an interesting discussion if approached right. Who're your favourite artists - 40k or otherwise? Why do they appeal to you?

This is a fascinating topic
On a more contempory level Aerion the Faithful is my current favourite artist. His artworks appear very, very simple, at first glance. But that is deceptive. The more you consider his works, the more you discover. He has a real depth and a fluid style I am in awe of. Honourable mentions to Alan Davis and Cam Kennedy and so many others.,, Oh, Kev Walker's Daemonifuge. IIRC he used computer wizardry and conventional drawing to create, what is a visually magnificent work. |

I have to admit that I just never got into Clint Langley. I admire his ability, but just don't like the end result.
I like - in no particular order - John Blanche, Nic Giacondino, Karl Kopinski and Phil Sibbering. I also rather like whoever did the covers of Horus Rising and False Gods. R. |

I love lots of artists and find there work inspiring, but if I had to chose some favorites, here is a list.
• Karl Kopinski & Paul Dainton - I kind of lump these two together, because they are equally inspirational to me, there recent work has been some of the absolute best to ever come out of GW. the epicness, sense of motion, and that feeling of glimpsing an unfolding event, are all captured so beautifully for me. Current Favourite pieces are: Vulkan He'Stan, The picture of the scout on pg. 66 of the new marine codex, and the "Taking of Mankarra" piece from pg. 43 • Ian McCaig - I love Ian's concept work. Just so absolutely beautiful to look at. He has the ability to makes something look both deadly and graceful at the same time. Plus, he is one of the absolutely nicest people you will ever meet. I got to spend sometime with him at a star wars convention chatting about the movies and (his then current, but sadly unfinished project) Jon Carter of Mars (of which I am a huge fan!). • Mike Mignola - What can I say about Mike? the dude is a figgin' genius and his work is so simple yet so powerful and expressive. I just wish he would get back to doing comics, Us Hellboy fans really miss him. • Aerion the Faithful - I have been a huge fan of his work from the beginning, but feel that lately he has made leaps and bounds of progress. (which I attribute to my constant nit-picking -T. |

I too, claim my nitpicking of Aerion's work as being the reason for his greatness Though Nicholas certainly is a dear friend, I have difficulties calling his work so good that he is a favourite of mine- This has more to do with the fact that I think he can (and will) do better, as wel as the factthat I call him a friend, then a lack of skill. Favourite Artists and why they apeal to me: *David - french revolution artis. One of the most famous paintings being Napoleon on the back of a horse. My favourite is "Death of Marat" though. Lovely usage of colour and brush. *Wayne England - without a doubt one of my favourite artists and great sources of inspiration. I love how he uses the acrylic to push shape and form to new heights. Many artists dislike his usage of contrast in his images, but I find it refreshing. *With Brachna - A young artist currently employed by Massive Black (Conceptart.org). This dude can paint in photoshop as if he was a romantiscism oil-painter... and that sais alot. *Björn Hurri - Conceptual artist at a gaming company in Brighton. I first encountered hs work (under the nick Hurricane) on Conceptart.org. He doesnt paint as much as one would want, he does conceptual work, but seriously. He does 200 concept sketches in the morning, by the end of the day he has finalized 3-5 concepts and moved on. I work in the business- conceptualizing and finalizing a character (a single one) usually takes 1-2 days per character. And not only that, he pulls it off so well that his concepts looks like proper illustratios (i.e. paintings). Huge source of inspiration as he is where he is today based upon PRACTICE. Yes people, just three-four years ago, this boy was drawing simple pen sketches with crappy anatomy. He spent the better part of two years drawing every wake moment and just practiced himself into greatness. So next time you think you are crap- look for Hurricane on conceptart.org and think about practice. thats about it I think... I could rant about shitloadsothers who inspire me, but those are most likely my big favourites... |

What a great topic!
Here are some of my favourite artists... GW: John Blanche... he's just a legend and I love his artwork and his vision to bits. Although I have to say that I do prefer his earlier work from the 80's. I managed to get hold of both Ratspike and The Prince and the Woodcutter... both just blow my mind! Wayne England... is also fantastic and I love the his well-defined style. His shading techniques can teach one a thing or two about art, just by looking at them. Especially love his 3rd Edition Blood Bowl artwork. Kev Walker... his work on Daemonifuge just blew me away. Also like his take on ABC Warriors and pretty much anything else he does. Jes Goodwin... I love for his concept art. Beautiful pencils and great ideas! I just wish a few more of the IG concepts found in The Gothic and the Eldritch would have made it into miniatures. While I generally love GW artwork, I much prefer the older - weirder - stuff to the new all dark and technologically much more advanced looking style these days. The magic that attracted me to the hobby in the 80's is lacking a bit in the latest stuff... for my taste anyway. Non-GW: Simon Bisley... the god of all comic artists! Such a shame that he's a lazy bastard these days. Frank Frazetta... the god of all fantasy artists! His shapes and values are something else. H. R. Giger... when I first looked at Necronomicon at the tender age of 16 I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing. He's been an inspiration ever since. Juan Gimenez... another fantastic comic artist, best known for his Meta Barons series. Especially his vehicle and architectural designs are absolutely stunning. Well, there would be plenty more to list and I'm only just starting to discover more and more digital artists... Cheers, Christian |

Always loved Blanche and his weird and wonderful creations. 40k books always benefit from his work.
Giger I loved and I'm still amazed at. Dave Kinsey and Dave foldvari I love. Great printmaking and painting. very street arty. Dave Mckeans weirdness and I like Frank millers Sin city. I've really warmed to Clint Langleys work. After buying the BL book of his work I love what he does. His Orks in particular. |

John Blanche is certainly my favourite GW artist however John Howe is by far my favourite artist overall. His work on Robin Hobb's farseer books inspired me to become an artist - admittedly only a year or two ago.
