QUOTE
Story of a young woman plunged into a Labyrinth where the secrets of her family's past connect to and inconceivable evil: the dark fifteenth-century reign of Vlad the Impaler and a time-defying pact that may have kept his awful work alive through the ages. The search for the truth becomes an adventure of monumental proportions, taking us from monasteries and dusty libraries to the capitals of Eastern Europe - in a feat of storytelling so rich, so hypnotic, so exciting that it has enthralled readers around the world.

Now, admittedly, I'm not fully finished this book yet. I'm roughly over half-way through, but thought I would get the ball rolling in this forum and post the first review.

I think the book is incredibly well written and thurough in research, but moves at a somewhat slow pace. I'm a quick reader, and have yet to finish this book I started about two weeks ago. The characters are well formed and incredibly lush and detail, and the setting in all time periods is beautifully done and creative. However, it does jump around a bit between time periods and characters, and though easily followed, gets a bit annoying.

There are twist and turns throughout the book, but not enough to make up for the sprawling descriptive paragraphs and sometimes very little conversation.

I do suggest it someone who enjoys Historical Fiction, and the darker world of mystery and horror. Though dealing with Dracula (Vlad the Impaler) it is NOT a fantasy novel, but a well-written fiction. It just deals lightly with the supernatural and has more to do with the journey's to solve certain questions that anything else.

What did you think?

Yeah, I've yet to finish the book. It was good, but like you said: slow. And again, like you, I'm a fast reader. I don't need action-action-action, but I had a lot of other books on my shelf to read, so I ended up putting it down and I've yet to pick it back up, even though I'd like to sooner or later. In fact, I think I lent it to my brother-in-law, oops.

This section is great, probably gonna put up my own review soon!

Yay! Put up as many reviews as you like. As like you, I read a ton and am always out to get someone's opinion on a book.

Yeah, I've closed The Historian again and just can't get back into it right now. I want to know what happens and how it ends, but there's so much backstory to every little thing I get distracted from it and just end up reading a few pages at a time. Slowly, but surely, I'll eventually get to the end.

Ohh! I've read this. It was like a year ago ... but I still read it. Anyway.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I agree that it did have a TON of little details which seem to be nothing, but I didn't mind it. The story seems to drag on a bit, adding more and more to the plot -- and there never really was a bigblowout with Dracula to finally finish him off. It was more like, oh!? He's here, I'm really super nervous, but let all the guys do the work which took a total of 3 minutes and 27 seconds for them to do, and half that to read. *shrugs*

All the information I found fascinating, though, and that made this book good.
