Title: Death comes on swift wings...and sharp teeth...

Dicorpo - November 21, 2005 10:26 PM (GMT)
This is my first time so go easy. ;) Anyway, this is my own interprtiation of the Battle for Macragge, i haven't read anything on it but someone was telling me the story behing the game so i decided, sounds interesting. So...here goes ^_^

By his wrist chronometer, it was not yet noon, but the temperature was warm and the air, clammy. Brother Captain Deranos Angelos was stood upright and to attention on one of the many lookout towers of the Imperial Fortress #1453224. The fortress stood towering thousand of feet in the air, Predator tanks patrolled the outer limits and machine spirits guided the many twin linked auto-cannons and missle launches that were haevily dotted around the city walls. He stood, gazing across the vast plains of the Mendiran Desert, watching the hustle and bustle of the local populace go about thier dayly business outside the massive towering gates of the Fortress. A soft breeze blew across his face, whiping particles of sand across the desert below.
The Marines had gotten the word that the Great Shadow had fallen across thier shadow days before, but there was no point in trying to evacuate the entire populace of this planet. They would stand and fight and when the time came, turn them into an efficient malitia; or at the very least they could distract the followers of the Great Devourer...
Angelos' mind was plagues by images of past Crusades led in the name of the Emperor against the followers of the Great Devourer. Guardsmen torn apart and turned into nothing more than mounds and masses of blood and flesh. Fellow Space Marines; the most fearsome warriors in existance, force to flee from the overwhelming numbers and awesome ferocity of this unspeakable enemy.
The suns of Macragge were setting in a synchronous movement across the southern skies creating a blood red hue amoung the thin whisps of vapour creating clouds in the sky. Almost beautiful...
"This will indeed be a battle for the books...many a Marine will loose his life..." He whispered to himself hypnotically.
Suddenly, a klaxon sounded all around the Fortress, it could be heard for miles around, the hustle and bustle of the town halted as the gates of the fortress slowly lowered and the massive electrified portcullis began to fall.
The sign was given, 3 ear shattering sounds of the klaxon, and the populace put down thier tools, left their goods, and hurriedly ran into the massive gates. When every man, woman and child was safely inside the massive adamantium enforced walls, the gates slammed shut and the electrified portcullis powered-up. The heavy armourments around the Foretress sprang to life, Space Marines appeared from every door, thier Blood Red armour glistening in the sun, the raven sat proudly upon the shoulder pad and the massive bolters loaded, charged; ready to go.
"Griminthus, raise the fence!" Angelos shouted over the vox-caster to the Tech-marine sat in the control room in the heart of the Fortress.
Slowly, a light blue semi-sphere of pure energy began to rise from the edge of the city limits. They rose above the top of the Fortress and all corners met in perfect synchronisity to form a seemingly impenetrable barrier around the Fortress.
From the orbital monitoring station, the same was happening at 17 Locations all around the planet.
From above, an ear splitting monster of a vox-caster began to scream at the planet.
"Attention, Attention all Ultramarines and Guardsmen, the Gread Shadow has fallen across this planet; we have detected a Hive Fleet on long range sensors; prepare for war and may the Emperor on His Golden Throne be with you. They will be here in 14 days..."

Sorry, im only just starting Warhammer, so, this was really a new thing to me. But any critisism you have about Warhammer, where i might be wrong or anything, pleeeease point it out. :)

Good, the only thing I have to say that, to my understanding, only one hivefleet has attacked at a time. Other then that, it's that Maccragge is protected by Ultramarines, not Blood Angels.

Nothing else to say otherwise-it's good, but could be proofread (Few spelling mistakes here and there)

It actually sounds like the Blood Ravens were guarding the fortress, althought Macragge falls under Ultramarine jurisdiction. Excellent writing style though, and imaginitive. Looking foward to the coming battle.

The entire foretress was up in arms, imperial guard uniforms were being produced as many as 1 every half a second, armour was rolling off the production line and onto men in seconds flat. Space Marines taught the arts of war to the thousands all around the city while tech-marines busidly scurried around the city checking the stability of the machine spirits.
Angelos stood from the observation tower 1000 metres above ground. The suns were rising and he had visability for 10 kilometres. They wouldn't be caught napping.
He gazed as the beached laviathans of bulky landing craft squatted on the sandy plains of the desert and from there, a thousand metres in the air, he could hear with pinpoint accuracy, the clank and grumble of the armour and other fighting machines roll off the landing craft.
Out of the moridian sky a Class II Thunderhawk flew by the observation tower, passing within mere metres of the mast. Angelos could feel the aura, the power, the sheer magnitude of the passenger. A Librarian had been sent to their aid...
This was indeed a most unheard of action by the Imperium, sending one of thier most valued units to a planet about to be decimated...There had to be soomething, some reason for them to do this...
Moments later the Librarian rose from the lift module. His blue armour, lined with gold made the entire room grow dim, his staff was topped with the Imperial Eagle that commanded such power and respect, Angelos fell to his knee. The Librarian walked over authoritavely and spoke with such fierce yet, soft words, "Rise Brother, this is no time to bow. The Emeror knows of your peril and so the Golden Throne has sent me to your aid. We shall vanquish this xeno horde and i shall be back in my chamber studying ancient scrolls before the week is finished."
Angelos rose, he had never spoken to a Librarian before, but he had seen them in combat; they were the greatest of heroes, able to destroy entire squads with their bare hands, able to melt the minds of even the most devout heretics and guide them to the path of the Emperor once more.
"What is the Emperor's will?" Angelos queried.
"The horde is now due to arrive in 2 days, we are - according to your reports - prepared..."
"Yes Brother, those Xenos will not breach our defenses...Brother Librarian, may i be so bold as to state that, this planet is days away from being attacked by a Hive Fleet, there is no Chaos, or Heretic here, why send a unit as important and powerful as yourself to this planet?"
"That is for the Emperor to know and for you to find out...Patience Brother Angelos, all will be revealed."

Imperial Foretress #1453222

"Sir we're reveiving an urgent message from the orbital station!" Yelled a tech-marine.
"Patch it to the vox!" Ordered Sergent Hellion Darnor.

"ALERT! ALERT! Incomin scout drone set to land mark ONE ZERO FIVE 3"

"That's only 4 miles from our position" Whisereped the sergent. "Dispact a search and destroy team immidiately!"
The gates to the massive Fortress slid open and 2 Predator Tanks armed with dual heavy bolter turrets and a 32" cannon raced out of the gates. Marching behind in a tight formation, 24 Space Marines armed to the teeth with melta guns, plasma guns, and heavy flamers looked ready to spill xeno blood.
The Marines approched the vessel cautiously and set up a formation around the small smouldering crater. Thier armour was gleaming with pride in the heat of the Macragge suns and thier weapons itching to fire upon this monstrocity of a scout ship.
It was a small pod-like ship, barely big enough for a Space Marine. It wasn't technology as they knew it. It was slimy, organic, bone seemed to wrap around the outter part from the top downwards, like ribs on a human. Veins pulsated and the craft moved and sweated in the heat of the suns. "By the Golden Throne, OPEN FIRE!" In a medly of pure destruction and firepower, every Marine and Tank opened up with thier full destructive force on the craft. Shells rained down from the guns and the and the barrels burned white as the projectiles were thrown out of the guns. "CEASE FIRE!" Immidiately all men stopped firing, they waited for the smoke to clear and all that remained of the craft was a black vapour of where it once lay. "Objective complete, xeno craft destroyed, returning to base." The men began home, in the same formation, pleased to have spilled the first of the alien blood.
Without thier knowledge form the sand behind them rose two razor sharp scythes. Rising and rising to 12, 16, 20ft long! Two spindly arms them punched up from teh sand, they were covered with horns and razors; the creature pushed itself up and stood crouched on the sand in the freashly deepened crater watching the Marines. Itshead had no discernable face or eyes, just a mass of teeth and syliva, it's tail, long and covered with deadly spines waved playfully while the carapace of the beast crunched and clicked as bone rubbed over bone.
With a speed that one only heads about in legend, the creature burrowed into the sand, headed striaght for the Marines; it's mission was simple, a single purpose drilled into it's head by the Hive Mind...send them a message.
With no warning the beast pounced from the sand, tearing through the bolter turrets of the first tank like butter with it's scythes whilst its tail whipped through the body of the tank killing its crew instantly. "LICTOR!" Screamed the Marines and opened fire, bullets, plasma and flame racing to the target, but all too slow to find it." The Lictor raced to the other predator, punching through the hatch and diving head first inside, the Marines outside could hear a whole mannor of creams and wails from inside, thier vox-casters giving them every individual detail of the horrors the men inside were facing. Every Marine trained his weapon on the tank and opened fire, it was destroyed instantly.
The commander of the units walked forward and with his power fist threw the corpse of the tank over. A hole underneath, the thing had burrowed through again!
"Damnit, Marines, spread out..."
The did as ordered, cautiously spreading, fingers on triggers ready to annhialate the first non imperal thing they saw. But too late, the Lictor jumped from the sand in the centre of them, it could hear everything underground like they could see with thier wargear bio vision enhancements. It jumped 18ft into the air, its tail whipped around the squad decapitating 2 marines and severing one at the waist, he fell still firing where he died in a pool of his, and the other two Marines' blood.
The Lictor raced with uncomprehensable speed towards 4 other marines, slicing them into pieces with its scythes. Did their blessed Imperial armour count for nothing?! The 4 men were turned into a mass of blood and torn flesh.
It was on his now racing towards the commander with fightening pace!
"One good shot...steady..." The Lictor was only metres from the sergent. "NOW!" He let out a blood curdling scream and a single melta shell fell to the sandy ground.
Lictor lay in the sand, motionless, headless, dead...
The commander looked around, his melta pistol still burning white hot, the smoke teetring from the barrel and being whisped away by the desert winds. He looked at the remmenants of the tanks, and the pools of blood, flesh and armour which were once brave space Marines. If one Lictor could do all this..."May the Emperor be with us."
