Title: The Best of the BL
Description: What to (or not to) read from the BL

flyinghippo - April 3, 2006 12:16 AM (GMT)
The title is sort of self-explanatory. whats ur favourite book. least fav. best author (not much competition here tho  )

I guess I'll start it off...

I'm not a complete BL junkie (yet). So far my recommendations would definately be for the Eisenhorn series. As well as Gaunt's Ghosts, so far I've only read First and Only but it seems pretty good so far :P But the short-story compilation: "Bringers of Death" probably isnt worth it...

Iron Trooper - April 3, 2006 08:32 PM (GMT)
FH:

Required BL reading for IWs - Storm of Iron, the quintessential fluff on the IW's.

Dead Sky, Black Sun - More IW goodness based on IW homeworld of Medrenngard.

The Ciaphais Cain novels are all good reads and funny too.

I've read most of the First & Only series, the Grey Knights books and the Soul Drinkers novels - all nice works too.

Storm of Iron's definately on my to-read list.

Ravenor's pretty good too...

Khargoth - April 5, 2006 12:12 AM (GMT)
Ravenor Returned is one of the best BL publications I've ever read, I really recomend it. Lord of the Night is pretty much essential if you want to know what the Night Lords were like during Heresy times, it's a great read.
Some 'classics' are Nightbringer, Storm of Iron, Space Marine, Angels of Death, Inquisitor, Harlequin and Chaos Child.

Kraull the Rampager - April 5, 2006 11:09 AM (GMT)
I have a ton of Black Library novels. For the most part, as long as you go into the novel with the realization that you are not reading Pulitzer Prize winning material, they are all pretty good, in their own fashion.

That being said, I do have some that I prefer over others. I really enjoyed the Space Wolf novels, the Gaunts' Ghost series, and most of the novels by Graham McNeill. The Soul Drinkers series was also pretty good, as is the stuff by Simon Spurrier and C.S. Goto.

The ones that I have not liked as much are the Ciaphas Cain novels, and the Iron Hands novel. Nothing really particular about them; they just didn't strike my fancy.

Overall, I find a good deal of Black Library fiction entertaining. I go into most novels not expecting to find the next Tom Clancy or J.R.R. Tolkien, and as such I am able to enjoy the novels that much more.

Insane Psychopath - April 5, 2006 11:50 AM (GMT)
As said Storm of Iron & Dead sun - black sky. Bother great Iron Warriors books & a must for any of us IW players.

On that note, Greame McNeil talk about having another two book full of our glories Warsmith from SoI. Basicly the first new one will be how he gose of dose his own thing, the Ultrmarine dose his own thing.... the second book will basicly be a BIG fight with both them (DS-BS). Not sure dates, this was back in March 2005 that the Scottish Conflict, but I will find out as he will be attending the Conflict this year & well I am not gaming so mean more time talk about forth coming stuff.

But again Storm of Iron & DS-BS are both great reads.

Khargoth - April 6, 2006 12:05 AM (GMT)
Hmmm. Honestly, I think some of the writers have more talent than most of the novels I see on the shelves these days. Simon Spurrier is definately a rising star, and so far I haven't read a novel by Dan Abnett that isn't a work of art.

Grand Warmaster Pinto - April 6, 2006 02:57 PM (GMT)
One of my favorites is the Dark Imperium collection of short stories, very cool stuff if you like Chaos. Another one that I liked was Lord of Night, I liked the main character a lot, almost got me to play Night Lords.

Khargoth - April 6, 2006 03:12 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I wrote up some rules to use Zho Sahaal in 40k, he's quite a powerhouse, but not unstoppable. Go check out the Chaos Marines Discussion board.

Grand Warmaster Pinto - April 7, 2006 01:23 AM (GMT)
Very nice work, I like the restrictions placed to even him out. I hope more books are released with him in it.

Khargoth - April 7, 2006 02:14 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I hope so. I was a bit naughty by creating fluff that he meets a regiment of renegade Night Lords, but you could always say he takes off on his own again to finish whatever quest he's on now... I'm interested to see what's happened to the sanctioned psyker (forgotten her name)

blackcell8 - April 27, 2006 07:22 PM (GMT)
Apart from Storm of Iron and Dead Sky Black Sun (the obvious), I've read Fire Warrior (good read), some of Dawn of War (not that good in my opinion) and Execution Hour ( :curse: ing amazing)

Khargoth - May 17, 2006 02:33 AM (GMT)
So far I have not read a bad Gaunt's Ghosts novel, so far my favourite would be Ghostmaker, the Khorne Berzerker assault on the Volpone Basilisks is just... insane. Now, if only they were as hard to kill on the tabletop as they are in DoW and fluff... maybe make the Mark of Khorne more expensive and include 'feel no pain' into it?

blackcell8 - June 22, 2006 08:44 AM (GMT)
I haven't read any Gaunt's Ghosts novels, I don't know why, but they don't seem to interest me too much. I still need to get Shadow Point, I think Abaddon is after a Blackstone Fortress...

Cassius Ironclaw - June 23, 2006 10:02 PM (GMT)
Personally I think the best is the Space Wolf series. ^_^
Something about these barbarians is funny...possibly because they seem to be more human than any other Space Marine Chapters. They make jokes, play games, insult each other, banter, and having drinking contests. And they're Space Marines...it's just great! :P

blackcell8 - June 25, 2006 07:40 PM (GMT)
I'm re-reading Excecution Hour now, purely becase it's such a great book. Now I want to re-start my BFG now.

Darthvegeta800 - July 17, 2006 10:17 AM (GMT)
I enjoyed Lord of the Night and Storm of Iron.
The two novels on the Dawn of War videogame are REALLY good too.
And off course the Space Wolves series is extremely good.

blackcell8 - July 23, 2006 07:57 PM (GMT)
Finished Excecution Hour again on holiday, its great that by re-reading books you point out the little things? Like the fact that Khoisan has a claw? I must've missed that the first time, I always thought both his hands were normal, but he has 1 clawed one? Also, does anybody know what Legion Khoisan is from, I've always pictured him as a Word Bearer for some reason...

blackcell8 - September 7, 2006 04:14 PM (GMT)
Anybody read the Vampire Genevieve omnibus? Amazing novels there.

Anybody read the Vampire Genevieve omnibus? Amazing novels there.

I read one of them once. I believe the name was Drachenfells or something.
It was bad... very bad. In my opinion off course. It just seemed boring and lacked a WH feel or any distinct feel let alone something decent happening. Off course others in the series might be better.

blackcell8 - September 9, 2006 07:25 PM (GMT)
Well, If you thought Drachenfels was bad, do not read Genevieve Undead, that's easily the worst of the lot. Beats in Velvet is alright, but Genevieve barely appears, but the last one, Silver Nails is a big improvement.

But I agree, it doesn't have a 'Warhammer feel' about it, but I thought it served as a good set of novels.

(nods) well doesn't mean they're bad in the eyes of another.
^_^
Just wasn't my style. I was really dissapointed after reading it. But fans of Vampires in the classic more how to put it 'melancholic' style will adore it.

blackcell8 - September 11, 2006 10:58 AM (GMT)
Yep, I did  .

But yeah, it is more of a mix of gothic/melancholic novel set in Altdorf and Castle Drachenfels. At least the inclusion of Karl-Franz cemented it's Warhammer nature, half way through I forgot it was a Black Library novel. Plus, I think you only find out in the later novels that Geneveive was Bretonnian (I think).

But the casual mention of Cathay, Kislev, Dwarfs (a Bretonnian Dwarf was in Beasts in Velvet  ), the Northen Wastes, etc was nce, it at least made you feel that it was set around the Empire.

Warsmith Xavier - September 15, 2006 04:30 PM (GMT)
The novel dead sky black sun makes an exellent read continuing the story of the iron warrior Honsou :bionic

blackcell8 - September 15, 2006 06:46 PM (GMT)
I can't wait for the almost obvious sequel to DSBS, I mean, both are alive, and hate eachother really, there has to be a sequel!

Warsmith Xavier - September 30, 2006 02:00 PM (GMT)
 i wonder what happened to guardsman hawke in SoI.........
:bionic

blackcell8 - September 30, 2006 07:10 PM (GMT)
*SPOILERS!!*

I thought he died after launching the missile? Didn't he have to manually launch it or something, and he died doing it and killing that IW?

*END SPOILER!!!*

Warsmith Xavier - October 1, 2006 02:21 PM (GMT)
nope, if you read the last part of the epologue again he is in there.

Dreachon - October 14, 2006 09:05 PM (GMT)
He's the only guy to make it back to his world alive.
There's a small article about in one of the WD during the EoT campaign.

blackcell8 - October 15, 2006 09:02 AM (GMT)
Wow.

So the moral of the story here is: Never underestimate the humble guardsmen.

Or it could be: Terminator armour will NOT save you from a point blank blast froma Titan.

Both ways work.

TheIronFather - January 2, 2007 01:29 AM (GMT)
I have yet to come across any really bad warhammer 40k book and considering I have about 40+ wh40k books thats really somthing! Now of course, Eisenhorn and Gaunts Ghosts are always good, and the Ravenor books are also good. They are all fairly good books so far, I think Fifteen Hours is one of my by far favorite books. But now, the WORST book I have ever read was a SoB book called Faith and Fire :puke ...Wow that book was...a forced read at best, the only reason I read the entire thing is because I had NOTHING else to do...that book just lacked the wh40k feel to it, it was just so distant from all the other wh40k books I have read.

blackcell8 - January 2, 2007 02:05 PM (GMT)
I'm considering reading some of the WFB books, mainly Inheritance and Dominion, I just love WFB Vampires! As I've said, the Vampire Geneveive omnibus was amazing, so I'm hoping these two won't let me down.

blackcell8 - April 21, 2007 08:38 PM (GMT)
Yep, I've started reading the Vampire Genevieve omnibus again! But this time, I'm for some reason looking for inconsitencies with current WFB history. Drachenfels was written in 1989, not long after the introduction of the Vampire Bloodline, and before the rules for them I think. A guy at GW Portsmouth didn't know what bloodline Genevieve was, I found out! Go me! So, if I ever want to use her, like we expected, she is a Lahmian vampire...

Also, got my copy of Inheritence reserved, so I'll be looking forward to that. And I'm strongly considering reading the Horus Heresy novels, purely to see what the fuss is about.

Darthvegeta800 - April 21, 2007 08:45 PM (GMT)
Read the first 2 Horus Heresy novels. Third lying in wait.
Read the last 2 Malus Darkblade novels. (magnificent series)
And have the Ultramarines Omnibus lying in wait... which looks good and complementary to Storm of Iron.

blackcell8 - April 23, 2007 01:06 PM (GMT)
So far I have read...

Excecution Hour (twice)
Storm of Iron
Dead Sky Black Sun
Drachenfels (starting to read it again)
Genevieve Undead
Beasts In Velvet
Silver Nails
Ambassador
Fire Warrior
Dawn of War
First Soul Drinker novel

But my favourite by far is Drachenfels, my worst is definatley Ambassador, it was just so boring.

Khargoth - April 24, 2007 03:20 AM (GMT)
I've read:
Storm of Iron
Lord of the Night
The Eisenhorn Trilogy
The original Inquisitor Trilogy (Inquisitor, Harlequin and Chaos Child)
Ravenor Returned
Ghostmaker

And a few others that don't spring to mind easily.
Want to read:
Nightbringer
Dead Sky Black Sun
more Gaunt's Ghosts novels

As far as character development, narration and atmosphere goes, Lord of the Night wins hands-down.
Overall storytelling goes to Dan Abnett, the man's amazing.

blackcell8 - April 29, 2007 06:03 PM (GMT)
Just finished Drachenfels again, and wow. Drachcenfels is so powerful, why don't tey mention him anymore? The only person to defeat him (before the book itself) was Sigmar himself. So, I got bored (yet again) and quickly made Drachfels a possibility!

Drachcenfels (Vampire Counts Vampire Lord) 430 Points
CODE
M    WS    BS    S    T    W    A    I    Ld    Sv+
6      6       6     5    5     4    5    8    10   -/5+

Wargear: Hand Weapon, Ring of the Night
Blood Line: Necrach, Nehekara's Noble Blood, Master of the Black Arts
Magic: Level 4 Wizard, Lore of Death

Reason he is a Vampire Lord and not a Master Necromancer is because he rips a Dwarf's arm off with ease, twice.

Drachenfels (Chaos Exalted Sorceror)
CODE
M    WS    BS    S    T    W    A    I    Ld    Sv+
4      5       3     4    4    3    2    5    8   5+/4+

Wargear: Mark of Chaos Undivided, Troll Hide Armour, Gaze of the Gods, Staff of Sorcery
Magic: Level 4 Wizard, Lore of Death

Reason he is a Chaos Sorceror now is because it never mentions that Drachenfels is a Necromancer, only an Enchanter, andhe does summon Daemons...

Pertuabo92 - June 24, 2007 08:24 AM (GMT)
Best 40k books in my opinion are the horus heresy books:
Horus rising
False gods
Galaxy in flames
Flight of the Eisenstein

Ciaphis cain books are good, as well as the space wolf omnibus and the eisonhorn trilogy. :thumb:

blackcell8 - August 8, 2007 11:33 PM (GMT)
I've got Fulgrim for my birthday, but I haven't read any other Heresy books, do I really need to?

Darthvegeta800 - August 12, 2007 07:53 AM (GMT)
Well it's definitely a worthwhile read.
I really enjoyed the first 2 (still need to start reading the third).
It actually adds to the fluff so to speak more so than any other novel as it shows how things truly began. The peak of the Imperium and the Space Marines and than the very deep fall... .
