Title: Cloverfield
Description: Formerlly 'New movie or PR stunt?'
Loki - November 11, 2007 02:17 AM (GMT)
Hi fellow Warsmiths.
Recently I was surfing trough the net, and came across this little piece on YouTube:
LinkObviously, it some kind of monster movie from a certian J. J. Abrams (funny, like the main US battle tank) Anyhow, before any of you "Zilla" fans out there scream; "It's Godzilla II"! you MIGHT consider this:
Nr. 1: Lady Liberty get's her head ripped off and thrown over half manhatten... Godzilla ain't THAT powerfull.
Nr. 2: In the trailer, you see a pretty neat explosion that is WAY to big for the atomic breath attack Zilla has.
Nr. 3: King Kong and Zilla have made it to the mocie screen. Has Cthulu?
So, it could be a new Zilla movie as a sequel to the original Godzilla from 98', Cthulu makes the world unsave in a brand new movie, or a PR stunt to see how the people on the net react to this little "Trailer/Teaser."
Yours Faithfull, Loki.
KingOfFools - November 11, 2007 11:33 AM (GMT)
I hope it's not godzilla. We need something fresh and terrifying.
cthulhu would be ok too, but I am sure this is not it. Do you know the film 'Dagon'?
Loki - November 11, 2007 12:26 PM (GMT)
Well, Every major "monster" has made it to the big screen, and a new Zilla movie would be kinda dissapointing. now, if it was Cthulu, then I would give 'em both thumbs up since he hasen't made it to the big screen. and with the computer animation technology nowadays, well, who knows? Anyhow, "Dagon" sounds familiar. Isen't that a film about some sort of fish-god-monstrousity?
KingOfFools - November 11, 2007 02:44 PM (GMT)
Yes, Dagon is rather a low budget film, and it's based on some stories from Lovecraft. It is in fact about a part of the the cthulhu cult. actually it is pretty well made for its apparent low budget: they get to cut that guys face off with a blunt knife while he is still alive and praying , now THIS I call entertainment!!
now back to the trailer, I really hope that it will be a serious monster film, there needs to be drama and stuff to terrify people and no happy ending where the good guys triumph and all is good eventually.
an off topic example would be the game 'conflict freespace', now there humanity was finished, they were hopelessly on the run. that was a good fresh approach.
Loki - November 11, 2007 04:25 PM (GMT)
Well, I just know Dagon from Wikipedia, so I haven't seen this movie. But what I DO know is that some b-grade movies tend to be BETTER then those big-screen flagships like -a random example- Reign of Fire.
As for the trailer, I wish it will be Cthulu who makes an entrance to the big screen. I'm a fan of Godzilla -the kajiu series, not the oversized lizard from the 98' movie- don't get me wrong there, but as nearly every thinkable "big monster" has made it to the screen, I would really like it if Cthulu brings the apocalypse to earth. Heck, they even made Transformers, for christ sake!
blackcell8 - November 11, 2007 09:37 PM (GMT)
Well, I've looked into this some more now, I've heard rumours that it's Zilla, Cthulhu, a new monster entirely, Transformers spin-off, or my favourite theory, Power Rangers!
Either way, looks cool.

Power Rangers movie?!? Pardon me, but... that would be calling an Grey Knight Justicar for a heretic!
How did you come up with that theory, blackcell?

Well, I have to second that. Gettin' a bit cranky 'bout yet another alien-brings-havoc-to-earth movie.
blackcell8 - November 11, 2007 11:07 PM (GMT)
I know, I'm hoping that that report is just another bit of viral advertising, still hoping it to be a proper monster movie, although I suppose, judging from the truly awesome (and just a bit mysterious) trailer, it's not too bad...
Loki - November 11, 2007 11:12 PM (GMT)
You know what they state in the 40k Rulebook: Hope is the first step on the road to dissapointment.
But, then again, I hope to it will be a proper "Double-monster-whammy" movie. just like those classic -and newer- japanese Godzilla movies... ahh, gotta love'm

A Power Rangers movie has been and gone, and featured some rather badass giant metal insects.
That preview... ooooh. I like. I'm casting my vote towards Godzilla 2. The roars sound familiar, and the original wasn't a massive flop. I mean, the 90's movie was faithful to the original Japanese films. Monster appears, makes massive mess in city, military flails against them until a weakness is found, monster is brought down. I think the little 'offspring' sub-plot was a good idea, as it added padding to the story, and gave justification for why 'zilla was so psycho-mad most of the time.
Also, the only scene Godzilla used it's 'death breath' attack involved roaring down an alleyway. It's implied that either the flying cars exploded after impacting with each other and the nearby walls, or that Godzilla's breath is in fact so
putrid that it's flammable. So the explosion could have just been Godzilla making something go boom, say an oil tanker. Hahah, just had a funny idea. Godzilla emerges from the sea, and is confused by another giant green thing standing by the shore. Godzilla takes it as a challenge, and throws a mega-tanker at it :P
New York suddenly finds itself without a Statue of Liberty, and a giant head in it's streets.
EDIT:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CloverfieldThat gives an interesting preview image of a headless Statue of Liberty. I appologise, but I have to have a rant here. That 'Power Rangers' support video on YouTube is typical d*ckhead fanboy behaviour. Stop wasting my time with ultra-slow fade-in, fade-out text, un-supported claims (who's to say that Paramount haven't bought the license to Godzilla? The first film wasn't such a huge hit that TriStar would viciously guard the licensing rights.)
But what <Deleted by the Gods> me off the most was that stupid analisis of one of the teaser images. Looking at that image the right way I could probably find an outline of George <Deleted by the Gods> Washington! I stopped the video at that point. It's tempting to wade into these freaking fanboy wars and set the record straight, but it never works. They'll always have some excuse or reason to justify what they think is right. Saying that it might be a Power Rangers movie, especially with the slight spoiler that it's an alien being that wipes out most of New York (with the possibility of the Power Rangers showing up in their giant mecha to stop it), that's enough, and I could agree with you on that basis. But saying that a blurry image conveniently picked out from the sillouhette of two women's hair that
kinda looks like Ooze, and saying that's enough evidence, that it
must be a Power Rangers movie now that we've made this massive breakthrough, gah, just f*ck off. Sure, that blurry sillouhette of Ooze is right, it HAS to be a PR movie, and the 9/11 attacks were caused by missles because jet fuel doesn't burn hot enough, and the moon landings were filmed in Wyoming.
Ugh. Now I'm angry and I don't know why. I guess I just can't tolerate people who are so incredibly
stupid. I hope no-one on this forum takes that as a personal attack, as it was aimed at whichever douchebag made that YouTube video. I guess a text reply wasn't good enough, he had to make an agonisingly slow video with sh*tty Linkin Park music in the background to be taken seriously.
Barrakus - November 12, 2007 06:53 AM (GMT)
I saw this add in a movie theater before transformers back in july. I asked around, the rumor I got was something about some lady opening Pandora's Box in New York and releasing some kind of demon thing (maybe a bloodthirster? :)) anyway, it was just a rumor and I don't really know what the origional source was but the people that told me this were right about alot of other movies, and it does sound like a pretty cool idea. either way, this add succeded in stoking my curiosity if nothing else. guess we'll all find out in a couple of months.
blackcell8 - November 12, 2007 02:22 PM (GMT)
Well, I remember that Power Rangers film... Good times...
BUT, that does NOT look like Ooze, under any circumstances! I just want it to be, not because thhe evidence suggests it, but because it was shown before Transformers. Now, the audience of the original Transformers are now old enough to appreciate a darker film, same with Power Rangers.
But then, I'm not seriously saying this is a Power Rangers movie, I think it's a good old monster movie!
Loki - November 12, 2007 03:28 PM (GMT)
To be honest, I hope it may be the sequel to the 98' Godzilla movie... would like to see the ol' chap back in action again.
But it could be kinda "War of the worlds" movie. Damn Aliens won't leave us alone, won't they?
Anyhow, I'm looking forward to it. If it is Zilla Jr. causing the havoc in lower manhatten, I'll be glad. If it is some sort of mr. Grey (alien) hitching a ride in a tripod and causing all this mess, I'll throw my soda on the screen and leave.
Barrakus - November 12, 2007 04:52 PM (GMT)
I just hope it's something origional, it seems like every movie coming out these days is a remake or a sequal to somthing else. heck this could be "Ghost Busters 3: Revenge of the Marshmallow Man" for all we know

That would be awesome. Especially if it starred the now-geriatric Dan Akroyd and Bill Murray.
How ironic that would be, old people fighting ghosts...

The movie will be about Chuck Norris on a hangover, you ca easily tell it by the sounds and the ammount of demage.

How could Chuck Norris possibly have a hangover? His body sucks the toxins from his blood and stores them in his eyes. Yeah. So he can shoot it out later like a toad.

there seems to be a new trailer which maybe shows 1 more frame of the mystery.

Well, I saw it, and the only words I can say are: Sweet Monkey Jesus!
It's unlike every other monster-movie I've seen before. You don't get to see "Clover" that much like you did with Godzilla in the 98' Tristar flick, but heck, it's absolutely worth the money! the whole movie is shot from a hand-held camera, which sounds bad, but actually makes this movie so unique!
In my oppinion, Film critics are 50% wrong. It depends on what a person likes or not, and if you like a good flick with big, scary monsters, this is the right one. it's scary, violent and unbelievable... :thumb:
Barrakus - January 20, 2008 01:22 AM (GMT)
I talked to a few friends today who saw it and they also said it was very good. I never really trusted critics that's why I posted this question to see what real people who obviously have at least some similiar likes as I do thought. I'm definitly going to check it out next week after i get paid.
Khargoth - January 20, 2008 09:49 AM (GMT)
I've been strongly recommended to see it. I will be, as soon as I have some bl**dy money! Stupid banks...

I strongly recommend Alien VS Predator 2: Requiem as well!

I've been told it's pretty pitiful actually. Unnecessary changes to the PredAlien background (apparently it can attack women to impregnate them with Aliens, like that idea hasn't been done to death), only one Predator and far too much screentime of the humans saving the day. To quote a friend who has seen it:
"The title says AVP; so why was there bugger-all time of the Aliens and Predator beating the sh*t out of each other?"
I'll probably pass up on it until it's out on DVD. Cloverfield I'll be seeing though, it's a new twist on monster movies, and I thoroughly like the idea.
Barrakus - January 21, 2008 02:56 AM (GMT)
I'll wait on AvP 2 as well, I was so dissapointed with the first one. I still don't understand why they don't put the movies in the future like the video game and comic books were.
NewbiePBer - January 21, 2008 04:06 AM (GMT)
I saw this movie the first day it came out with a bunch of friends, and some of my friends that saw it before me had mixed reviews about it, one said it was really good, some said they didn't like it. The ones that didn't like it left the movie early because the y sat in the front and the camera movements were messing with them. Although in my opinion, the movie was great! I love how epic and intense the whole movie was, begging was a little slow though. I also like how they kept everything secretive.(ex. not seeing "Clover" a lot)
Pay close attention to the final scene with Rob and Beth at Coney Island. I missed it and I think I will be going back to the movies to see it again, for what I missed and to pay closer attention for clues of a sequel. :D
Khargoth - January 21, 2008 05:06 AM (GMT)
Mild Spoiler: I've been told to wait until the credits are over and to listen carefully. There'll be a sound of heavy static, then a quick snippet of "It's still alive" backwards.
Barrakus - January 22, 2008 11:12 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I heard the sound after the credits, didn't understand it but someone said it was "it's still alive" backwards.
I personally liked the movie. and considering the amount of money it has made so far, there will probobly be a sequal. I think if there is a part two it would be better as a more traditional monster flick since the whole "amature cameraman" way of doing it would be hard to make interesting after seeing it once.
although if they took the same general idea but used a compilation of military gun camera or UAV footage so it was just non stop action that would be cool. they could even put some general intel recordings into it to make it look like a DoD Threatcon video referance. that would fit it in with the first like they were part of a briefing.
sell it in a box set with some "confidential" files showing pics of the beast and some background and it would be a cool set to have.
As a side note I love how they mentioned incoming air sorties from Selfridge ANG base, as a native from Michigan who's been there about a hundred times I thought that was cool
blackcell8 - February 16, 2008 05:30 PM (GMT)
Well, I saw the film last night, amazing.
What about making up some rules for 'Clover' for Apocalypse?
Loki - February 17, 2008 11:20 PM (GMT)
Take the stats from a 'Nid Hierophant Titan, perhaps?
blackcell8 - February 18, 2008 03:23 PM (GMT)
Too small, 'Clover' is 350ft tall, according to J.J. Abrams
How about this?
Cloverfield Monster Points: 3000
First encountered before any surviving records, the Xenos, codenamed 'Cloverfield' has survived the many efforts of Mankind to remove it from existence, but with no luck. For over thiry-eight thousand years this creature has survived. Many thousands of years before the Great Crusade even bagan, 'Clover' was sent on a ship of almost impossible size of its time, away from Holy Terra, where it was believed destroyed. That was untill the events of the 13th Black Crusade, where more reports of the creature started to surface.
It's size is unimaginable, bigger than the largest encountered Tyranid Bio-Titan, the
Tyranicus Patris Boletus, the Heirophant, and is easily a match for all but the Emperor Class War Titans of the Legio Titanicus. The creature has supriseing dexterity for something of it's size, and has, on more than one occasion shown the preference for throwing ground vehicles, even taking out air support with these impromptu missiles.
Type: Gargantuan Creature
Weapons and Equipment: Claws
| CODE |
WS BS S T W I A Ld Sv+ 5 3 10 10 15 4 7 10 2+ |
Special Rules:Toughened Skin: 'Clover's skin is able to withstand attacks that would kill lesser creatures, surviving attacks that would level cities. It's skin is comparable to the armour given by the Tactical Dreadnought Armour of the Adeptus Astartes. It gives Clover a 2+ Armour Save, and a 4+ Invunerable Save.
Parasites: Clover is covered in dog-sized parasites, which drop off its body as it goes. Once every D3 Turns (roll after every time this is used), you may place 2D6 Parasites in base contact with Clover, these form a new unit, and Victory Point are worked out as normal, and may capture objectives.
Throw Vehicles: Clover is dangerous from a distance as well as up close. This is a Shooting attack, and may only be targeted at Vehicles, not Infantry, Gargantuan Creatures, Flyers or Super Heavy Vehicles. Target one Vehicle within 8" of Clover, if the attack hits, pick a location within 24" of the Vehicle's starting position, that is not off of the board. It then scatters 2D6" from this selected location. The Vehicle takes D6 automatic Glancing Hits, if it lands in Impassable Terrain, however, it is automaticaly destroyed. If the Vehicles lands on another unit, the unit suffers 2D6 automatic wounds, with no Armour Saves allowed, Cover Saves, and Invunerable Saves are taken as normal, and this does not inflict Instant Death. If the thrown Vehicle lands on another Vehicle, they will both suffer D6 Glancing Hits. Or, Clover may target a Flyer with this attack. Once the target Vehicle has been sucessfully hit, instead of choosing a point within 24", you may instead choose a Flyer within 12" of the Vehicle's starting location. This is treated as an attack with Strength 10 and an AP of 2, roll to hit the flyer as normal, and this is not an AA Attack. The thrown Vehicle is automaticaly destroyed if thrown in this way.
Parasites Points: 40 Each
These creatures are attached to 'Clover', whether they are it's offspring or not is not entirely clear, but they could simply be symbiotic parasites, living off the monster for food in return to a small manner of protection, or some other, unseen benefit. What is certain, however, is that these Parasites are lethal, their bite is like some toxin, if the bite itself won't kill the victim, then the after effects will, either it injects the victim with offspring, which hatch mere minutes after, or it leaves behind a poison which ruptures the body, causing it to explode.
Unit: 2-12 Parasites
Type: Infantry
Weapons and Equipment: Claws (count as a single Close Combat Weapon)
| CODE |
WS BS S T W I A Ld Sv+ 3 2 4 3 1 4 2 7 5+ |
Special Rules:
Fleet: See Page 74 in the Warhammer 40,000 Rulebook.
Infectious Bite: The Parasites' bite either impregnates the victim with eggs, which then hatch in an explosive burst, or they cause the victim's body to create an excess amount of body gases, which it cannot contain. Whichever one it is, the victim slowly feels weaker and weaker, cuts won't stop bleeding, untill they start bleeding from every available place, their body swells up, and explodes in a hail of organic matter. The Parasite's attacks have the Rending rule.
Any good? I mean, Clover is pretty much unstoppable without the aid of some seriously heavy support, while it can spawn smaller units which can take care of light infantry.
Loki - February 18, 2008 04:20 PM (GMT)
haha, love the "Throw Vehicles" special rule! But the parasites have a better save then the average genestealer?
Parasites could be given rendig claws and enhanced sences. Maybe give "Clover" the frenzy rule after he loses his first wound?

I could give Clover something like that, but then when seen at the end of the film, he seems pretty docile, he must have thrown Hud to the ground after biting him in half, because Rob and Beth wouldn't have run to him otherwise. So I'm guessing its pretty calm otherwise.
Also, JJ Abrams has said that Clover is a baby, a new born! So if thats a kid, whats an adult one like? 400-500ft tall?
Otherwise, I'll mess with the Parasites a little, I got to have them worth the points, but not over powered because you can spawn new ones...

Whatever you do, just don't overpower them. think of them as little 'Nid hormagaunts. They do come in large numbers, but they're very allergic to most weapons. Heck, even a blind guardsman with a battered lasgun can kill a hormagaunt.
