Hey folks, I was wondering what you guys thought about the new Guard Codex. I really like this one. It is much more versatile than the last one. The ability to take vet squads as troops makes it possible to sculpt an army to match pretty much anything in the fluff from Gaunt's Ghosts to a full armored company.
I like using vet squads with the demolitions special rule to represent sending waves of unaugmented sappers strapped with explosives to breach an enemy wall, before my Iron Warriors get there. The fact that one of them can be nominated as a suicide bomber with a demo charge is just the icing on the cake. You can even support those sappers with up to 9 basilisks. I also bring in the master of ordinance, not only does he allow the use of another large blast template but it's so inaccurate that it gives a real feeling that the higher ups don't really care too much about the faceless masses. It's a lot of fun. I played a couple of simple games yesterday and did pretty good. In one game I had to blow up a bunker to win. I sent three full squads into no man's land, and only one troop made it through (lousy eldar bladestorms), he was pinned by barrage fire, but i pulled off an order from my command squad for him to get back into the fight. That lone troop got up, made it the last 10 inches, planted his melta bomb and BOOM, game won. The poor sucker even died in the explosion. Ahh.... good times. |

I like the new book. Some things like the deathstrike-oneshot-doomsday-missile is kinda stupid as it really should just be in the apoc book and not the regular gaurd codex but I do find that the variety of tanks and other unit choices make this a very nice list. I need to pick up the book and read more but from what I have seen/read/watched played, this book is excellent and not many guard players from my area are complaining.

Yep I like it as well. Been the only codex where before I started collecting the army or getting stuff gather, I been changing it none stop. I belive I went through 20 list.
So first game I was slaughter but I spoted the weakness right away (platoon, just to static for me & my style of gaming). My third game with a update list (no platoon) only seen the Penal Legion killed, but they came on the wrong flank...even with Astopath I like Valkyrie/Vendetta, because of the model I went on to try fit that least 3 in the army. Leman Russ, I like the move & shot all weapon, been useing the no cover save one mainly due to a ork oppent & his force feild (I swear he only fail one save per game). Penal Legion are alright, not been impress as they not had much to do. I think the only way to play Valyrie/Vendetta is to flank them, never ever deep strike them since they are not allowed to fire (Land Speeder, Drop Pods to name a few been FQA on this). Take a Astropath Also I like Battle Psyker, hide behind a Russ with only one with line of sight, watch as you give of some large blast shots. Though it been ironic, when I roll for AP to be a 6, it alway a spot on hit & I kill that leasy 40% of models that been hit, while if I roll anything else for my Ap, it tend to go way off. I've started seeing a few Guard army show up that my local GW's & club. What do you think of the orders system? I personally love them, it gives the army a realistic feel, you are now forced to maintain some formation in order to keep your squads within leadership distance. And it makes the leaders actual leaders and not just the unit with the most toys like in most armys.
The order to "get back in the fight" won me a game, and a squad of missle launchers following the "bring it down" order took out 3 tau tanks in one game. Some people may think they give an unfair advantage to the guard. but in my humble opinion, the order system is exactly how an army like this should be run. |

I think that they did a really good job, granted some things like the points cost of the valk I think could go up considering its what? Three twin linked lascannons upgraded and for jack squat points wise?
But overall I gotta agree that the order system really makes it feel like guard and gives them more of a chance when a slaughterhouse rolls into their lines. They can at least throw penal troopers at it -------------------- |
