One thing that I think made a huge difference for Alain was finding the right therapists. Early Intervention was key - they made the initial connection for our PT, who made a world of difference in erasing any delays Alain had physically. Our first speech therapist did not have expertise with feeding difficulties. We asked around, and got a recommendation through our day care provider. We requested a change through EI, and they had no issues reassigning us. Having someone who understood oral aversions, aspiration and other mouth sensitivities was a huge help. We used a variety of tools - like Z-Vibe, to get Alain over some of his protective behaviors.
Through our PT, we also have an annual visit with a specialized PT who focuses on respiratory development, and its effect on overall health. She has been wonderful at recommending on-going work to assure that Alain will not have any lasting issues due to his rough start. She's even given us work to do to help loosen his surgical adhesions so they don't tough and tighten, impeding movement over time. I think the key is finding some who you feel is addressing your child's key issues. If you don't think you have the right person, you don't. Check with your day care provider, and those of your friends. They have probably had therapists work on site, or have connections with families who may have recommendations. Remember - you are your child's best advocate! |
