Title: Sloppy Gearbox + Clutch

JTMILLER - July 20, 2010 05:25 AM (GMT)
Alrighty so my gear stick is rather sloppy, when its in gear or neutral it has a lot of play and feels loose, also the shifts dont feel as tight as they used to, gone from locking a padlock to pushing a stick into a bowl of jello,

The clutch is probably 30,000km old and feels no where near as hmm clear? as when it was new, when pulling out the grab points aren't as defined as new and around 1/3rd of the way out there is a shudder every time, especially noticeable when removing it quickly.

It got its 170,000km service in mid February, it is now sitting at 173,500km, but I did do a full high performance track day around 170,500km.

Thoughts? Should i get the 175,000km service as its been 5 months since my last one. Or is this not something they would look at.

(Always serviced by Lexus of Adelaide)

...and I don't think either of those problems would be looked at in a service.

The clutch is just the way it is wearing in, there will be burn marks on the clutch plate, pressure plate & flywheel which have different grip rates.

My TRD setup is the same, if you hold the clutch just as it picks up it shudders, you just have to drive around it. A few more revs and don't pause when you engage it and its fine.

You're probably better to spend the time investigating the gearlever yourself and finding out where the slop is. Some disintersted mechanic will just start replacing parts at one end and keep going until either they fix it or you run out of money... the usual way of fixing things!

How hard is it to change the shifter bush? something i can do myself with a big hammer?

You can get this far quite easily.

That will show you the plastic bush on the bottom of the gear lever and the pivot bush halfway down. Start with sorting that out and hopefully it will solve the slop.

Nick will know what the bushes are worth and what to replace.
