Title: Altezza 3s-ge Throwing Engine Codes

CraigA - September 29, 2011 03:06 AM (GMT)
Hey,
Had a bit of a problem today in my 1998 Altezza Rs200 tiptronic, the engine light came on, then went off... I kept driving, and came back on about 5 min later and stayed on, while the was on the TRC light was flashing, the car was idling terribly, the brakes werent very effective, and car stayed what seemed to be in 2nd/3rd gear. Got the fault codes read (see codes below) , apparently heater 02 sensor, and a VVT sensor... does this scenario sound familiar to any one???
Cheers in advance for any feedback/guidance/help!
Craig

What else did he say?

..and what did he suggest to do about it??

Were they 3 different codes?? Heater (motor) & O2 senser, & VVT sensor?

Some codes come up if you just turn the key on & don't drive the car, so they are discountable.

Mechanic had the car again today, and the two codes just one VVT code and the h02 code... he said what I was suspecting that is looking like one of the VVT solenoids, prob the inlet one, rather than exhaust, but going on a scope on Monday to try diagnose properly! think the part numbers were 15330-74040 and 1533-74030 - ex japan only and take three weeks to arrive... guess Ill be trying to find some good second hands parts!

Got mine from Nickthe next day I'm pretty sure.

Feels like the mechanic and I are going round in circles - unfortunately no Toyota mechanics nearby, cant drive the car like it is

Anyway, the engine codes its throwing is
P0135
P1354

Can any Altezza Gurus decode these?

Cheers guys!

P0135 is 02 Sensor. Inspection part - Wiring and connector / Oxygen sensor / Engine control computer.

I can't find any ref to P1354

P1354 - VVT System Malfunction

P1354 - VVT System Malfunction

Cheers, does anyone know what could cause the VVT system malfunction??

Hi Craig
I had the same symptoms - mine ended up being worn springs on both VVTi advance cams.
What stumped the tech was that they were both showing as faulty so he thought it must be something else - wiring, computer?
In the end replaced the cams with two second hand ones and all good.
May also wish to check the pulley which does the timing advancing as sometimes this sticks apparently.
Hope this helps.
cheers
Harley

Cheers for the reply Harley,
Will have a chat with mechanic about that tomorrow... Hoping can get to the bottom of it!!

I also have this exact problem right now. Exactly the same as you describe it but apart from the brakes working terribly, felt like seem of lose power as well.
My mechanic took it in to see if there were any fault codes. But apparently computer never showed any fault codes. Mine seems a bit more serious than yours, engine light comes on and doesn't go off again until the say stays off for a hour or two.

We have tried to clean the sensors as well as a new set of spark plugs has gone in. And so far so good, light hasn't come back on so far.

Hey Ben,
yea so it was throwing the fault codes, and they replaced the timing again, the cam angle sensor, cam gear, but turns out it was the vvt-i sensors (two, one inlet and one exhaust) so all the other stuff was replaced for no reason!
Good luck, can be a very daunting process
My car had no power also, the motor sounded like it was missing.

Thanks for the reply Craig.
Do you think I can ask you how much you got the vvti sensor + labour cost you in the end ? So I sort of have a figure to compare it to.

Thanks again.
