Title: Toyota Unveils New '86' Sports Car
Description: 27 November 2011

TOYOTA UNVEILS NEW '86' SPORTS CAR

Toyota has taken the wraps off its newest sports car, announcing it will be called Toyota 86 or "hachi roku" in its home market, Japan.

The unveiling occurred when Toyota president Akio Toyoda drove a production prototype down the main straight of the Fuji Speedway, south of Tokyo.

Mr Toyoda said the new rear-wheel-drive sports car was all about "waku doki" - a car that creates excitement and gets your heart racing.

"I am very proud of this car," Mr Toyoda said.

"Thank you for the patience of car lovers. They are going to enjoy this car."

The 86 is a rear-wheel-drive car with intuitive handling that embodies the essence of driving enjoyment.

It features the world's first horizontally opposed D-4S engine, combining "boxer" engine technology with Toyota's cutting-edge D-4S direct injection technology.

The engine is installed front mid-ship to create an ultra-low centre of gravity and low inertia. It is the world's only horizontally opposed engine and rear-wheel-drive package.

As a result, the 86 offers fun driving at a level unprecedented in earlier sports cars.

It carries on the spirit of the AE86 Corolla in its aim to be a car that evolves with its owner.

The lightweight and compact rear-wheel-drive platform was designed to achieve superior handling and create the world's smallest mass-production four-passenger sports car (by volume).

The vehicle's newly developed engine delivers exceptional output and torque as well as superior response at low and medium speeds.

The D-4S, with separate twin injectors for both direct injection and port injection, boasts a high compression ratio of 12.5:1. This provides high output and high torque over a wide range of engine speeds and contributes to improved environmental performance.

The engine's redline is 7500rpm with maximum output of 147kW. Even so, the engine achieves fuel efficiency and environmental performance that rivals that of a standard two-litre sedan.

Customers will have the choice of a six-speed manual transmission or a special sports-driving six-speed automatic transmission.

The 86 has the lowest hip-point of any Toyota-brand production vehicle and creates a driving position suited for driving enjoyment.

The rear seatbacks fold down to the front to create a luggage space that can accommodate four sports wheels or two golf bags.

The exterior design features a predatory look at the front; the sides are a modern take on Toyota's sports-car heritage; and the rear view is wide and sturdy despite the compact cabin.

The interior design seeks the essence of sports cars by emphasising the form, placement and materials of each element.

The seatbacks and cushion surfaces are designed to provide support during acceleration g-forces from the front, the back and to the sides. In addition, the shape of the front seats is designed to prevent elbows from interfering with gearshift operation.

The circular steering wheel has a diameter of 365 mm, the smallest in a Toyota-brand vehicle. The wheel's surface was optimised with exhaustive feedback from test drivers to enhance steering performance and grip.

A three-cluster meter built around the tachometer has been designed with particular attention paid to display placement, markings and typeface to enhance visibility and readability during sports driving.

Main Specifications of 86 (Production Prototype)

So want one

No weight in the specs... 980Kg? 1400kg?

I was chatting to the guy a the head shop when I picked up Greeneye's head yesterday. I idly picked up a tiny, skinny-stemmed valve off the counter and ask if it was off a motorbike. No, its off a Subaru, and that's the 'big' stem, the new ones are down to 4mm..

I reckon its a bad move by Toyota. Problems with that motor will sink the whole model and its a difficult time to release a "nice but I don't need it" sports car.

I see in Europe it will be called the "GT 86". Looking forward to seeing one in the flesh (hopefully new cars will let me take one for a test drive)

Wonder if they'll do a black & white panda paint job from factory??? That gold is very late 90's, early 00's. Reminds me of a VT Commodore or AE111 Corolla

jeremyflower - November 29, 2011 06:54 AM (GMT)
Engine bore x stroke 86 x 86... I wonder if that was deliberate or whether it just turned out that way? ;-)

xero - November 29, 2011 07:46 AM (GMT)
There is something about it I just don't like... I believe the car has been overhyped and has the potential to underdeliver... I would be keen to get behind the wheel of one, to see if it's all its cracked up to be... <_<

I think It looks cool enough, the headlight treatment is a bit off IMO, engineers had the opportunity to make it more like the concept, and there are many manufactures who can make headlights like the concept... I think they have missed on this one, but that's my opinion.

I think the best quote I have seen is "Kia has made the 370z"

nz_climber - November 29, 2011 07:47 AM (GMT)
Probably just turn out that way, same as the Beams 3sge also a lot of 2L cars have a square bore:stroke ratio with the exact same dimensions.

Subaru has released the BRZ at Tokyo auto show.

Looks better in blue & white

This picture reminds me somewhat of a mark 4 supra..

Tezz-Winnie - November 30, 2011 09:46 PM (GMT)
Its ment to be in the range of 1200Kg. Not likely to be any heavyer but neither party is releasing weight specifications till it goes into full production. All I can say is that power to weight ratio is going to be no better then an IS200 :o...

I hope the tuning houses come up with a few crate engines and turbo kits for this thing. I guess the hype surrounding this car will be a positive in that respect.

LoL just trying to picture someone trying to drop a 2J in there haha Shame there isnt enough room! You might be able to shoehorn a 3S in therebut if your going to that effort you might as well go the 13b :/

14YER - November 30, 2011 11:10 PM (GMT)
7tune reckon they have conformation of the weight

QUOTE
The ultra base grade with no frills will weigh in at 1180kg's and the entry model with extras will come in at 1240kg's!

greeneyes - December 1, 2011 02:11 AM (GMT)
[QUOTE]and the entry model with extras will come in at 1240kg's![CODE]

Ouch- still a fat-arsed blimp of a small car!

I could pull 100Kg out of the Altezza to get 1240kg- and I think that would be a nicer car.

Still, we'll see what it drives like.

Tezz-Winnie - December 1, 2011 02:24 AM (GMT)
I think thats what they are going for, handleing. Ultra low center of gravity, short wheelbase, reasonably light weight and rear wheel drive manual capable of revving in the 7-8K range. I read one quote from Toyota that it has enough room in the back when you lay the seats down for either a golf bag or 4 track wheels. Mr Toyota wanted to design a drives car but without the power this will be the new generation Celica im afraid...

Still 40 something grand for a track warrior is crazy when you can build a clubman (lotus 7 replica) for that.

greeneyes - December 1, 2011 03:21 AM (GMT)
Actually, weren't they aiming at a $25000 price tag when they started the project?

Under $30k would make it work.

What was the ratio of KE70 to AE86 in 1983??

jdm.racing - December 2, 2011 11:59 AM (GMT)
that blue 86 from speed hunters looks like a supra cross dcr5 type r lol looks awesome though

147kws is ok from a 2L not turbo but they needed to have a 180ish kw turbo option in the line up!!!!

cuz who will turbo a car with 12:1 comp.... and whos going to go to the effort to strip down a brand new motor to put forged internals in???

im sure it will handle like its on rails but 9/10 handling doesnt make up for a lack of power!!!!

there is meant to be a "sport" version of it with 200kw turbo for toyota i read somewhere, and subaru are just going to awd + turbo for an sti version.

haha- I'll bet that's where the arguments came in! Subaru wanted a floor plan design that would easily allow 4WD and Toyota did the floorplan & couldn't give a shit about that.

SMH today- http://smh.drive.com.au/motor-news/land-of...1201-1o8x7.html

QUOTE
The chief engineer for the project, Toyota's Tetsuya Tada, admits the Subaru and Toyota teams did not always see eye to eye during the car's development.

''Both Toyota and Subaru have their own philosophy and pride in car making,'' he says. ''There was a lot of frustration, arguments and discussions.''

While Toyota has announced it will begin selling the car in Australia in June, Subaru Australia has yet to commit to it.

QUOTE
While Toyota universally celebrates the arrival of the 86, Subaru Australia is still undecided about whether to import its version of the car, the BRZ, because the car does not have the company's trademark all-wheel-drive underpinnings.

But in the clearest hint yet he might launch the car in this country, the managing director of Subaru Australia, Nick Senior, told journalists the car had appeal because it was ''fun to drive''.

E910 - December 4, 2011 10:24 PM (GMT)
QUOTE (drive.com.au)
Estimated price: Less than $40,000
Australian launch: June 2012
Weight: 1210kg (estimated for manual), 1250kg (auto)

Ard Righ - December 5, 2011 11:33 AM (GMT)
Still undecided on the car. I think it would be a great fun car to drive, like RS200, but a bit on the heavy side.

Typical Toyota over-engineering at work again :P

Still, if they did launch a turbo model of this, I think it would sell like crackers

Those were my exact thoughts when I saw the release. I was so very dissapointed at the final design in comparison with the concept model. Also heard a similar quote about the ft86; "A melted down version of 370z"

00100100 - December 6, 2011 09:03 AM (GMT)
I have noticed that designers always do this ... make the concept have a sharp/angry shape and then release a melted down version of it. They always have to make it angry but not too angry (lol) so that it appeals to everyone.

I suppose this was a special case anyway, it needed to look like a Toyota and a Subaru at the same time! abit hard to achieve. With imagination involved, it also look like a Celica 2002 :P

The shape is growing on me, although I'm still not a fan of the tail lamps.

Its a baby supra!

I wonder how it would be an inch lower with racing slicks, coilovers, sway bars, bracing, an epa unfriendly full headers & exhaust, ITB, aftermarket ecu and a good pod filter? Faster then a Lotus 7 replica that might set you back the same price? I think not

That right there might cost you 10-15K depending but should be good for a bit of extra g force and 50-100atwhp.

Needs a snail to capture my interest unfortunatly.

The 2012 TRD catalogue won't be released until end of March as it appears they will be including TRD 86 parts :woot:

Tezz-Winnie - January 17, 2012 11:49 AM (GMT)
Radiator caps and aero parts or real TRD parts :)

Yes, nice. Added to shopping list :P

BTW, TRD Door Stabilizers FTW :D

Tezz-Winnie - January 18, 2012 12:22 PM (GMT)
What about ITB's, cams and induction kits at least like the old days!

Haydinho - January 18, 2012 01:33 PM (GMT)
This car is on my buy list, i even renegotiated it into the misses and my future purchase's plan :woot:

I have had many different cars, all different makes and models, but the AE86 takes the win (should never have sold it :( ). If the Toyota 86 is half the car the AE86 was then its gonna be better than the Altezza. ..

It appears that Subaru were clued up enough to make the engine mounting the same as the Turbo ej257 - so easy forced induction options are already in place

The modellista model looks sexy as, but i am quite happy to settle for a TRD kitted manual 86.

Bring on the used imports!

Haydinho - January 18, 2012 01:38 PM (GMT)
Tuning shops have had their hands on these for a wee while now, so expect plenty of ready to go after market parts come launch time.

Last weekend I visited a Toyota dealership with the family (of 3) as I was considering the 86. The rear seats are useless! With the driver seat in the correct position, the back of the seat is almost touching the rear seat. There is no way my son could even sit in the rear.

I was so hopeful before going in that there may just be enough room for a child in the rear seat :(
