IS200: Resetting engine ECU
Author: Colin Barber

It is recommended that the engine ECU is reset after any engine performance modifications have been made to the vehicle, including using a higher octane fuel, to accelerate the learning of any new parameters. Resetting the ECU will also clear any stored error codes, however if you have a fault with your vehicle it is advisable that these codes are retrieved rather than wiped as they may help in diagnosing the problem.

Make sure the ignition is turned off

Remove the engine bay fuse box cover

Remove the 20Amp/25Amp EFI fuse

Remove the 15Amp ECTS fuse

Wait 30 seconds

Re-insert the two fuses

Install the fuse box cover

It is also possible to reset the engine ECU by removing the battery. Please note that this method will also reset any memory settings such as radio presets, trip mileage, clock etc.

Thanx for that chucker.

OR otherwise disconnect your battery for a 15min period or so, this will reset the ECU, your Head Unit presets, and whatever else electronical you have in your car.

Just noticed something... Why do the Colin Barber notes and my picture above suggest removing the EFI and ECTS fuses, yet Stephen's DIY on the Aussie website suggests the EFI and ECU fuse?

Good question....let me check that. I normally reset the ECU by disconnecting the negative battery terminal.

This is only a short term memory reset

for any mods you do, it is best to disconnect battery for half an hour.

you will then need to drive the car for a bit for it to re-learn how to do everything.

Please explain to me how it only resets the memory for a short term.

It doesn't seem logical that disconnecting the power to the ECU by removing the fuse is any different to disconnecting the power to the ECU by removing the battery terminal (and then having to reset your clocks and headunit settings as well).

but if u dont leave it off for half hour there is still a memory in the ecu, for fueling etc

if u have mods it is better for it to learn again

Did anyone get to the bottom of the original contributor vs. the Australian DIY differences? In my 2002 AS200, I have the ECS fuse but not the other one (EFI?) mentioned in the original contributors message. However, I do believe I havew the one that the Aussie's refer too!!??

I have just replaced the stock air filter with a K&N and really want to "reset" the car, without taking off a battery terminal if possible.

just went to reset my car, funny thing, the ETCS fuse was not there... so i took the spare 15A and put it in... hope it should be alright...

so i took out EFI, ECU and already taken out ETCS fuse and waited for more than a minute and put it back, the clock and trip meter was reset, car stereo memory was not reset though... drive around a few blocks, everything seems alright...

i was wondering y the ETCS fuse is not there, shouldn't all altezza have ETCS function? <_<

jasestu - June 21, 2006 06:28 AM (GMT)
ETCS, electronic throttle control system? I would think the car would struggle with that fuse out...
