Title: Diff suggestions.
Description: diff

grinder - June 9, 2005 10:39 AM (GMT)
Hi Guys,

Pretty much new to the Lexus world and I'm looking for some suggestions on what to do with my diff to cope with the power.

I own a Is200 and was looking at buying a 300 diff as they are bigger but I have been told that they don't make any tall ratio's like 4.1 is this true? and where can I get one if they are around.

Does a 300 diff bolt straight in?

Also I'm sure you know of some people out there with powerful Is200/300 and I'm wanting some suggestions on what they are using. Maybe even supra diffs?

My car will hit the drag strip once. but I do want the diff to be able to handle it as parts are not common or cheap.

Thanks

Brett

supra diffs requrie some welding and crap to get it to work....a few people in the US have gotten it done

as for the is300 diff...im not sure what you need xactly but i would advise getting a complete rear subframe ...from disk brake to disk brake

Yeah have spoken to toyota and priced a full diff, just thought with the money there might be a better alternative i.e supra diff

I just dont want to limit myself with diff ratio and fork out money for a new diff only to have problems.

Someone I know has used a is300 diff and in the states they use a 300 diff with a TRD centre and say it will handle up to 1000hp.

It is the easiest alternative but if I was looking for easy I wouldn't have started this project. I want something different that makes peoples jaws drop.

You think a supra diff would be stronger than a 300 diff? Haven't heard of anyone braking a supra diff and they run pretty big tyres.

Any other thoughts?

Sirnixalot - June 10, 2005 05:06 PM (GMT)
the supra diff is indeed stronger than the IS300 diff but im at a loss to tell you at what point they all break...

I got an LSD from the JDM ALtezza, I belive its 4.11?? Its been fine so far, and its had a bit of abuse.

Also, Im stunned you can get a Supra TT Diff in there, have you seen the size of them??? My friend got one sent to Melb, it weighed 60kg, my diff I got, weighd 10kg, and about half the 3x the size smaller than the Supra diff. I doubt it will fit! Maybe look into a GS300 diff Brett.

Thanks Shane,

I will ask around about the GS diff. The supra diff would be a great avenue though.
Finding a IS300 diff is like looking for rocking horse S#@T.

I could buy a new one but the car is way over budget. I'll let you know how I go.

Ok obsessed, this is what after long research I have decided to do about my diff.
Supra diff will not fit under the car with out interfering with the structure of the diff's sub frame and car's belly panels, so a Skyline diff will be more suitable, the size of it is a bit bigger then the IS but similar bold paten.
A friend has a R33 GTS-T Viscus LSD Diff and drive shafts that I will fit in my IS in a week or two, you maybe like to consider a GTR lsd for your conversion.
However I will tell you what I had to do to fit the GTS-T diff and it will be the same mod for you if you fit the GTR one ( both diffs are some size).

Thanks Yianni I appreciate that.

Either that or I will just go with the IS300 diff, I can pick up a new one for $5000 complete fom side to side including a TRD L.S.D centre (brand new.)

MADALTEZZA,

I myself already have over 300hp at the wheels, I'm looking for a diff that will handle over 1000 at the fly.

I have heard of the IS300 LSD handling ot over in the states. I just dont want to pay $5000 for a diff because I think it might handle it.

Thanks for your replies. Keep me informed Yianni Cheers.

Wen to the diff shop today to find out what I need to do about the drive shafts and told that after I fit the diff in the car they will measure and make new shafts to suit, the cost will be $1000 + gst.
A GTR diff will set you back $700-900 ( Melbourne price) plus the cost of fabrication and fitting.
Good luck making decisions.

Thanks Yianni for your input. I'm takinmg it that a GTR diff is stong considering some of the power they run. I am at the stage that I dont know which way to lean.

Let me know what the out come is please.

The IS300 shares the B-series diff as a JZA80, I would be surprised if a B-series diff from a JZA80 doesn't bolt into a IS200 or 300, you also need the axles to go with it as one is longer than the other (so you can't use the axle from your A-series diff).

Re: Nissan Diff.
Talk about doing it the most expensive/complex way possible.
The Toyota A-series Diff is the same as the older G-series, found in MA&JZA70's, if you are after a TORSEN centre get a JZA70 diff, strip it down and put the TORSEN Center into your A-series diff.
At the end of the day the A/G series diff is the same size as a Nissan R200!!
And stay away from those sh!tty Viscous centres.

Cheers,

I have actually been told that they have put supra diffs in 300's in the states.

hi guys

ive been checking out diffs lately the is 300 diff is the same as a rs200z but with taller ratio 3.9 or 3.7 compared to a 4.1 or 4.3 ive got over 500hp at thw wheels with the standard 4.1 diff and i can say ive abused it and ive only had one let go

MonsterMat - August 17, 2006 10:32 PM (GMT)
indeed im still...currently running the std is200 diff, with 580hp, its getting a little whiney, but still locks wonderful

grinder - August 18, 2006 11:12 PM (GMT)
The IS300 diff has larger half shalfs and a slightly bigger centre over the IS200 (so I am told).

Drifting would be alot easier on the diff than hard launches of the line with drag radials..

I am going 9inch (4 link) with most probably a 3.7, haven't work out the ratio yet I'll sit down and do some calculations..

ae25 - September 22, 2006 11:21 AM (GMT)
just some input here... the two altezza diff's i've had apart were 7.5", one a torsen the other an aftermarket clutch type lsd.. so A is comparable to F series (not the 8" jza70 G series or hilux diff)... to confirm this i sat the altezza torsen in a corona live axle F292 7.5" diff head! and i've heard of guys on toymods forums running altezza torsens in their rwd celica's

grahamd - September 22, 2006 11:34 AM (GMT)
Have a Soarer B series Torsen diff in the garage - it is almost twice the size of the IS200 diff.

Would love to change ratios in mine as the 1J fairly screams in 1st gear. WIth the turbo it can stand a much taller ratio - something around 3.5:1 would be about the best.

greeneyes - September 23, 2006 04:45 AM (GMT)
So...

Who is going to draw up a nice Exel table showing the diffs in different car models, diff model numbers, ratios, and locking systems??

:P
