Title: Traction Control System
Description: Does this happen to anyone else?

Slipstream - June 25, 2006 06:12 AM (GMT)
Hey Guys,

I was driving up a hill tonight to get home ( I travel up this hill in the Altezza twice a week ) and it was wet and the Traction control light came on as usaual does, but this time the engine hit a rev limited and would'nt increase speed <_< but as soon as the traction light went off the revs picked up.

Has this happen to anyone or is it normal

jeremyflower - June 25, 2006 06:21 AM (GMT)
That's how traction control works, it limits engine power to stop wheelspin (well basically anyway).

xavier - June 25, 2006 06:53 AM (GMT)
only available to RS200 or both AS200 and RS200
or is it available to manual transmission? cos i dun see traction control on my dash and neither do i have the traction control button...

jeremyflower - June 25, 2006 06:57 AM (GMT)
Unsure, check the posts that have the specs for different models would be my advice...

xavier - June 25, 2006 07:02 AM (GMT)
i found on some of the altezza website, traction control is optional for automatic... i wonder can i get traction control by adding altezza traction control ecu or there will be alot of stuffs i need to add???

Slipstream - June 25, 2006 07:12 AM (GMT)
My Altezza is a RS200 Manual - I thought that traction control moved the speed(Traction)placement from side to side?

jeremyflower - June 25, 2006 07:17 AM (GMT)
I'm sure it's possible if it's a factory option, absolutely no idea what is involved though...

Would it be worth the money?

Dont think so, when I drive out of the carpark at work (really slippery floor) and happen to still have traction-control ON, when the wheels spins, the squigly yellows lines appear, the dash beeps and it just pretty much slows the car down till the wheels stop spinning.

Not entirely sure but I think MOST manuals I've seen all have traction-control, which can be switched off by the 'snow' mode button whilst autos only have the 'snow' and 'power' button...
(please correct me if I'm wrong.)

jeremyflower - June 25, 2006 10:11 AM (GMT)
My AS200 manual sure doesn't have traction control, proved that on many occasions... ;-)

No button THERE?

jeremyflower - June 25, 2006 10:19 AM (GMT)
Nope, all I have there is the blue LED for my car alarm.

LOL ok that sets us back to step one.

OK, how about everyone just post their car's details so we can all see and compare WHO had traction-control and WHY :P .

I'll start to give ideas.

ok well just by looking at mine and jeremy's cars, I can pretty confidently say the Traction Control isn't specificly only for manuals, or the 'Z' spec Altezzas.

Could it be only for the Manual RS200s and an option for RS200 Autos?

What about the IS200s out there?

jasestu - June 25, 2006 07:08 PM (GMT)
It's optional on AS200s.

Traction control works by easing off the throttle and also applying the back brakes. To solve your problem slipstream try it in snow mode which outputs a much lower torque to the wheels (so hopefuly you wont lose traction)

Helps but doesn't cure it :P haha.

(not when you dump the clutch at high revs or if the roads really slippery. unless you just need more thread on your tires :D )

chisiang - June 27, 2006 07:00 AM (GMT)
We were discussing this topic some time back in Singapore and from what I can recall,

Earlier production has TRC and on/off buttons.
Middlde production around 2002 has TRC but there's no on/off buttons.
Late production do not have TRC.

To disable the TRC, you need to remove the TRC fuse (huge square slow burn fuse) located in the engine bay (necessary if you want to put it on a dyno). Do not remove the fuse in the cabin as it will disable other functions like ABS and dials.

Although, my button was mounted on the RHS of the steering wheel? Sideways... The loom was factory made to reach there for some reason, but I have shifted it back to the centre coz my neck was hurting from leaning to one side to read it... What does snow do?? I have tried pushing the button and spinning the wheels, but cannot figure it out?? Maybe there is a snow making machine, but it needs filling up??

Well here is something for you to try, when your driving on a flat road, while keeping your speed constant, engage 'snow' mode, you SHOULD feel the car slow down slightly, and see the speedo slow down too.
Disengage 'snow' mode and the car should regain its speed again.

The 'snow' mode has something to do with the Electronic Throttle Control System if I'm not mistaken, it makes the throttle less responsive (needs a heavier foot on the gas then usual just to accellerate)

i think it should be ECT (Electronic Controlled Automatic Transmission) cos i dun have ETCS but i have SNOW button and ECT... When i press the Power button, ECT Power light came on in beside my speedo...

DataBitz - June 30, 2006 01:31 AM (GMT)
Bit off topic but found this from Toyota Technical Articles
Electronic Control Transmission (ECT)
The Electronic Control Transmission is an automatic transmission which uses modern electronic control technologies to control the transmission. The transmission itself, except for the valve body and speed sensor, is virtually the same as a fully hydraulically controlled transmission, but it also consists of electronic parts, sensors, and electronic control unit and actuators.
The electronics sensors monitor the speed of the vehicle, gear position selection and throttle opening, sending this information to the ECU. The ECU then controls the operation of the clutches and brakes based on this data and controls the timing of shift points and torque converted lock-up.

LXTASY - June 30, 2006 01:11 PM (GMT)
I got told that in the IS200's the manual's came with traction control and the auto's came with cruise control. Which is gay cause they should have BOTH!

Vehicle: Lexus IS200
Year: 1999
Tranmission: 6 Speed
TRC OFF button: YES
SNOW button: YES
CRUISE button: NO

NOTE: I used the SNOW button on a 2 hour highway trip from the sunshine coast to the gold coast (QLD) for the first time tonight and was so suprised on how much better my IS200 was on fuel with this button turned on. I admit it does decrease your power output but just for highway use i definatly recommend turning it on. You get about 5-10ltrs per 100kms more than usual.

I use the 2 buttons all the time. TRC OFF button for lighting it up easier (haha) SNOW button for fuel economy (seeming we dont have snow here in QLD) and leave it standard for a good lauch. ;)

Does anyone know if these buttons has light, I remember when I turn on the lights in the dashboard all lights from a/c controls, gps controls and TRC/SNOW controls had orange lights... but now doesnt work...
am I wrong?

2ToneTezza - May 7, 2012 04:27 AM (GMT)
correct, the TRC light comes up on the dash when TRC is off, and flashes when TRC kicks in.
