HILUX AUSTRALIA'S MOST POPULAR NEW CAR

All-time record sales for Toyota's HiLux made it Australia's best-selling vehicle in June, according to official sales figures released today.

During the month, Australians bought 4,756 HiLuxes - enabling the long-time favourite to grab a narrow victory.

It is the third time HiLux has been the nation's top-seller. It also topped the sales charts in April and October last year.

HiLux - which often doubles as a workhorse and family transport - is the only ute ever to claim the title of Australia's most popular vehicle.

The HiLux nameplate has been on the market for more than 37 years and it remains Australia's most popular light-commercial vehicle.

Toyota sold 21,410 vehicles in June - the company's strongest result since June last year.

The total was more than 9,000 sales ahead of Toyota's nearest rival.

There were also strong sales from Corolla (4,066), Yaris (2,194), Camry (1,783), Aurion (1,628), Prado (1,442), RAV4 (1,341) and Kluger (1,255).

Toyota's senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said June was characterised by strong sales of vehicles such as HiLux.

"The overall car market picked up significantly towards the end of the second quarter as business and consumer confidence started to rise," Mr Buttner said.

"The general improvement gives us confidence as we head into the second half of the year.

"In addition, the Federal Government's bonus investment allowance played an important part in helping to stimulate sales.

"Toyota's broad range of vehicles offers a wide choice to customers and we encourage owners of businesses with a turnover of under $2 million to consult their tax advisor to see if they can take advantage of the 50 per cent investment allowance that applies until the end of the year," he said.
