So I had the car serviced LSD oil changed / Gearbox oil drained and changed while I was at the Cricket on Saturday (working).

Gear shifts are notably nicer and the lube in the back also made a noticeable difference.

But I'm not sure if its just because I have not had a manual for so long or if I just noticed it more because of the service however the gear stick seems to rattle a bit.... Is this common (normal) huh.gif

Also on start-up there's a bit of noise, sounds like lifters (these don't have shims/buckets?) which will go away once the car warm's up.
Noise sounds like it's coming from the opposite side of the injectors (another common age issue?)

I don't believe there's anything to worry about but would like a little more understanding of the vehicles traits?....

Cheers.

FR manual gear sticks do rattle & move around a bit yes. Nothing to worry about but if you think it is excessive then maybe get the engine & box mounts looked at. (does yours make a noise or just vibrate?)

What grade & brand of oil are you running? I used to get a bit of tappet noise during cold winter mornings for a few seconds on start up with 5w-30 Edge so switched to 0w-30 for better flow when cold. The 3SGE has buckets & shims http://z4.invisionfree.com/lexusaltezzaclu...?showtopic=7086

The rattle is most noticeable in 6th, I believe I have some OCD so I could put half my concerns to being paranoid rolleyes.gif

However it vibrates more than I recall in my V6 Holden I had, visibly so and when out of gear moves quite a bit too...

As for oil that was not changed, I have skimmed "the oil guys" lengthy write up.
I'll probably move to mobile1. After looking at Motul and getting advice from the lads whom use it, it would not be beneficial being that the engine has likely had all sorts of oil's through it.

I was advised that unless I've used if from a fresh rebuild I'd likely not reap the benefits of such a high grade oil and just to stick to mainstream.
This is true as I'm not tracking the car or be it for some time to come.

Never had the bad noise from the 20v with shim's and buckets, but may look at getting them reset/replaced a bit later on.

If you're after a reasonably priced oil for street use then have a look at Takumi 0w-30 http://z4.invisionfree.com/lexusaltezzaclu...showtopic=12646.
Edge used to be the best bang for buck in NZ but since they released the new Titanium version the retail has shot up to over $80 for 5L. Mobil1 5w30 is only $90 so I'd run that over edge any day for another $10.

I'm gona ask another newbie question around these cars as I've not experienced it before, that and I don't want to start a whole heap of newbie threads likely covered before but not easily found in a search tongue.gif

First gear if holding the clutch in (probably too long) I get a shudder.
This appears to have popped up in a couple of older posts and other guy "driver around it".

Does this ring true? The car seems a bit learchy if not driven like a kitten in first (more to do with the clutch I suspect) another charistic of the Altezza or sign's of a worn clutch?

More to do with throw out bearing. Should never hold clutch in for long periods of time.

Expensive fix?
I was reading the Hilux bearing also fits.

Why would you use a hilux bearing. Just buy a new one from Nick. Yea cost you about 400 labor. Might as well do the spigot bearing, clutch and flywheel while you are there

When you changed the gearbox oil what did you put in? If you've been reading the forum you'll have seen Redline MT-90 rates very highly around here.
You also said you haven't changed the engine oil yet? You'd be surprised what old or to higher viscosity oil can do to the overall running of the car. My car got all lurchy in first towards the end of my last 10K running Edge 0w-40. Never had that problem with 5w-30/0w-30.
Also the dual mass flywheel will shudder if you don't have enough revs on.

Its not bad.. (just vibrates) but reading about the clutches etc I couldn't really find a comparison other than the trd unit is good as are other lighter flywheel/clutch combo's.

I drive in Auckland traffic so would be looking for something for day to day driving but would be interested in something better than factory if it's that expensive to replace the dual mass but its a ways off needing to do anything.
Something between strong and street driving, if there is such a thing wink.gif

Never needed to swap a clutch etc before so it would be something new but I don't want to make an expensive mistake!

Nope trying not to ride the clutch wink.gif

Yep, have not changed the engine oil, I believe it was just provided by whatever shop it was last serviced at so an unknown really.

Cheers.
