Got a new windscreen today at Smith and Smith. Dropped it in yesterday. They took the windscreen out and discovered some rust that needed fixed. $120 down the drain, but that's OK.

Anyway, picked it up and..

Sealant all over the bonnet and guard. Impressive, since they cover those areas. Fortunately all these buffed off.

The odd scratch and gouge.

A windscreen that looks like it's not quite the same shape/size as the old one so they've touched the corners up with tape and a paintbrush..

user posted image
A seal along the top the doesn't follow the line of the windscreen (you can see it's higher on the far side, lower in the middle)

user posted image
And because the seal sits lower than it used to, a crappy looking line across the top of the screen.

So, not very happy with that. Will have to do something about the A Pillars but I'd imagine I'll be screwed on most of the rest.

So anyone know what the deal is with the poor looking fit?

I used smith and smith to replace 2 windows when my car got broken into at new years, had issues after issues with the front passengers window, the guy said that they are getting all their glass from china now and the molds they use are crap, in my situation the glass was thinner than factory so would rattle in the door, come off the rails, in the end they got a 2nd hand window and put it in............guess what problem solved.

Does someone mind taking a decent photo of what the windscreen *should* look like fitted in one of our cars? Especially those top corners. The seals on this definitely don't reach to where they used to, just want to see if I can spot the difference.

Thanks!

Mine definitely looks a bit different in the top corners - yours meets right up to the little guttery bits (which are silver on yours, black on mine) whereas mine falls half an inch short there.

Search on the forum and I think you'll find a thread with numerous people having bad experience with the Smith & Smith francise.

A guy at work got a cracked windscreen, called Smith & Smith, the repair guy comes and thought he was repairing a chip, so had no windscreen to replace. The repair guy was surprised himself, since the guy at work talked to the boss on the phone.

Yeah I'd suggest going in there ungrumpily and asking for a bit of compensation for the ripped felt/interior.

I got my front windscreen replaced on my old skyline (on insurance for a stone chip) through Smith and Smith in Petone.

I would NEVER go back again, they broke my windscreen wipers, the trim strip around the top and sides, and what is worse was the 5cm shards of glass i found on the passengers seat and numerous peices throughout the footwell ohmy.gif !!! doesn't bare thinking about what that could have done had someone sat on it, those suckers were friggin sharp.

Needeless to to say, I returned the next day fuming and had it fixed. Only to have the window leak on me a week later angry.gif. i eventually took it in to S&S in newtown, who fixed it no probs.

Hell no! Take it back and have those pillars re-done completely. They should have them recovered as per original, as they ruined them.

That really is an abysmal job!

I had a stone chip completely f**ked up by Smith& Smith in East Tamaki before I discovered Novus in Manukau City. They did all my cars after that.

What was the out come spoon?

Went in there on Thursday. Left the pillar linings with them, they're getting them recovered or replaced. Hopefully hear back early in the week.

The seal across the top had evened itself up a bit - I haven't looked since Thursday, but I've had a couple of trips out to the airport so hopefully it's even better now!

The mess of paint etc at the corners is due to the panelbeater - might go see him later on.

Anzac I think.

Went and picked up the pillars today (they never called me - had to go around there and ask). They look OK - you certainly wouldn't notice they were recovered if you weren't looking for it.

Unfortunately when I was putting them back on (I offered to do it - I just picked them up from the upholsterers as I was going that way anyway) I think I pushed the wee plastic clips into the pillar. I'm pretty sure someone in Japan did the same thing on the driver's side already as one of the clips is a metal one.

Anyone have any of those clips spare?
