Considering ditching the pod filter and going standard airbox for a neater bay, and possibly a smoother low end.

To do this I'll need to completely remake my intake pipe and play with the others a little, so before i bother i would like to see if anyone's done the same thing and can comment on the effect it had.

Inspiration - Toms 280T style

Why not just make a CA-box to suit?

Here is one stolen from Andrew's (distrb) VIP Garage build thread:

Another one from Craig's (craigb) build thread, albeit it's NA, same idea:

Which he later painted:

Yeh, I already have a CA box - but would prefer to get it looking as factory as possible under the hood!

Just put the factory box in. Run intake pipe to back, connect with silicon joiner to where the factory bendy pipe to the throttle body goes... What do you need to know? Dont know how well it will handle the flow up top though?

Don't think anyone who has turbod their car on this forum has done it so it'll be trial and error your end. If you don't like it though it wont be a hard one to change back so just smash it in there and see.

Yes, I would like to know if anyone achieved positive (or even negative) results in doing putting factory airbox in and whether it caused any sort of restriction or improved drive ability.

My intake pipe runs BELOW the cooler pipe that goes into the throttle body, so piping will require modification and or remaking in order to get it fitting up.

One of the lads on tezzaworld took to the inside of his air box with a dremel. Smoothed out all sides & reckoned it made an improvement to air flow. I've been try to get him to post some pics but to no avail. Could be worth a try to help with top end flow for your turbo application.

What you dont realise is those edges / ribs are partly responsible for straightening the airflow over the maf sensor, if you remove them you might as well just run a pod filter?

So this Sunday I'll be knocking up some new intake piping and modding cooler piping to suit a standard airbox I picked up from Japan - I'll let you guys know how it goes... hopefully decently as it will make my engine bay look 100x neater!

Anybody got just the snorkel piece that goes over the radiator for me?

real keen to see how you go with this I am thinking of doing the exact same thing and it would solve my air flow sensor location problem

Will give some feedback and photos once done. I just want my engine bay neater, and hopefully gain a bit of low down torque!

Sooo after measuring everything up properly it was too tight a squeeze without alot of custom work... so ended up doing this instead:

Looks good either way!
Pity our ECU box is on the LH side, would be a lot easier to put the intake there should it be somewhere else lol

Haha I know, I strongly considered extending some wires and moving it... but cbf tongue.gif.

It's a shame to cover up the nice welds but I'll be painting the the pipes in black hammer/wrinkle coat soon.

Would be easy enough to make if you could get a hold of the male and female plugs from somewhere? Toyota sell them Nick?

Would have to leave one end unpinned to get the wires in to the cabin though if you were wanting it in there.

If you had that adaptor it wouldnt be hard. just craploads of tedious soldering. Once you added an extra wire on.

No soldering involved you just need a pin insertion tool and a lot of patience
