Found this video the other day and the product looks quite promising. Just wondering how effective it is though and whether it actually works. Has anyone heard of PlastiDip or even tried it?

It works, and it is the easiest way to alter the color of a part. or even the whole car.

I have been doing vinyl wrap for a while and my customers have asked if I can also provide plastidip service. This is usually my response:

It is less labour to apply and the effect is not bad, however the color is very very dull. you will have no reflection at all what so ever, therefore if you apply to the whole car you will not be able to see any lines or the curves of the car body. at night your car is just a black shadow...you can get gloss material but they look cheap IMO
On the other hand, it is extremely useful when you want to coverup your chrome badgings, grills, door handle. as it would come out very nice and even.
removal is also very easy. It is basically just adhesive latex. it'll peel off wihtout much effort.
however, because it is so easy to peel off, you may have trouble once you get one little stone chip, the rest may eventually peel off.

If you are interested in this. I would recommend you look at getting the spray on plastidip.

Interested to see what happens once they are covered in brake dust and you need to attack them with a brush / waterblaster to get them clean? will it be bye bye paint?

with the matte black you can't brush it..u can only wipe it..hence a lot of effort to clean...it'll just be easier to peel it off and spray them again lol

you can use a waterblaster, just don't spray directly at the end. you will need to be very careful when you spray with high pressure

what Geoff said is correct, they were initially designed to use as an insulator for metals but obviously people starts to find other use for them

i saw a matte black car done with plastidip...it looked good..but again..it is just way too dull with no light reflection at all

I've seen alot of videos on plasti dip from painting wheels to a whole car it seems to be a pretty durable paint that can withstand everyday driving. I've seen people jetblast the stuff and still doesnt budge, but I cant honestly say that I have done this myself. To get the gloss effect you can always use Plastidip Clear Coat which gives it the shine.

All in all its an awesome product I reakon smile.gif

I'm actually very interested to try them.
Anybody knows where can I get them in NZ?

So far I only found Scarles, but still waiting for their response on what available colors are available.

Lets us know how you get on with colour range.
I'm looking to paint my rims, this could be an alternative to a spray can before I make up my mind.

This stuff is getting very very popular, over the last few days I also have been asked by several customers if I can do plastidip rather than vinyl wrap....going to take a look and finding some supplies.

You can get a glossifier to spray on top. depending on how many layers you put on, more layer = more gloss

found a distributor in AU, it seems they can provide me with custom colors. will be interesting to see

What I cant fathom, is after applying 5 -6 coats of this stuff it just peels off nice and easy, how does it adhere to the surface long enough to bond to the surface when you consider the conditions cars are subjected to with heat, rain, stone chips etc

From what I had thought guys do this for say a carshow spray the whole car, have it done for the show and that's it

the beauty of this stuff is as long as it doesnt split crack or chip it will stay intact and if it does you just spray over the top! Brilliant stuff

every layer that you put on it'll just bond together so in the end you have one thick layer. as Winnie said, unless it cracks you will have no problem. which you don't have to worry about since it is more like silicon or latex..it doesn't crack.

another reason why it stay on so well is because when you spray it onto metal. each tiny particle is attached to the metal before bonding with each other to form a layer. therefore there will be no air bubbles. airbubble is your enemy. when there is no airbubble, the vaccum will also help it stick as well as it own natural adhesive

i must say, if it wasn't because of the variety of colors available with vinyl wrapping. i would've gone with plastidip to begin with...

honestly can't find any negative to this stuff other than the color choices

depends on how smooth the surface is. should be ok.
you can also buy a can of cheap gloss paint from repco or bunnings. smooth coat it first so the plasti dip will stick on better
