TOYOTA SMASHES PIKES PEAK HILL CLIMB RECORD
Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) broke the electric vehicle course record at the legendary Pikes Peak International Hill Climb last Sunday.
Multiple Japanese rally champion Fumio Nutahara drove the TMG EV P002 racecar to a time of 10:15.380 on the now fully paved 19.9-kilometre course, beating the previous class record by more than two minutes.
The time was also over 15 seconds faster than the nearest electric-powered class competitor Hiroshi Masuoka in his Mitsubishi i-MiEV Evolution and placed the TMG EV P002 an impressive sixth in the overall classification.
The TMG EV P002 is powered by two axial flux motors, which deliver a combined output of 350kW.
The advanced electric motors also deliver 900Nm of torque through a single gear transmission.
The fully electric drivetrain maintains full power even in the thin air of the course, which begins at an altitude of 2,862 metres and finishes at the 4,300-metre Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs, US.
The Radical chassis-based TMG EV P002 is a development of the street-legal TMG EV P001 that broke the electric car lap record at the Nόrburgring Nordschleife in 2011.

that's a shame...
..and that's quite an advantage. I can see why electric aeroplanes have a future if they can make light batteries.
I wonder if they have speakers and a motor-noise-generating system to let the driver know he going fast, rather than silence apart from the tyre noise!

Agree, It really takes away from the true spirit of the Pikes peak rally. There is no way a car like this would survive on gravel. Im guessing now they are allowed full slicks ect too??.
There was one bloke that literally jumped the mountain this year, this is going to get worse and worse because they can take that corner ridiculously much faster then a gravel car could.
Long live the pikes peak celica!
