You can just as easily use a corresponding factory 1JZ computer - no reason why not.

It's easy to get an engine (without a factory immobiliser) to run in an IS200 - it's harder to get all the factory crap on the IS to run properly - and by properly I don't mean removing bulbs from the dash!

BTW, if you start off with an Auto IS you don't have to worry about diff ratios etc for the speedo as the signal comes off the ABS/TRC ecu rather than the back of the gearbox.

ISon20Z - I'm from Toowoomba so quite close.

Have done one myself - not hard once you work it all out. Had to build a few circuit boards to simulate some of the functions to keep climate control working.

I'm really liking the 1jz swap for the tezza... CCT3 i particularly like how yours looks yours looks verrrrrrrrrry clean and pretty much factory!! can you say anything about how the engine fit in the engine bay? did you have to get custom mounts or anything? did any parts have to move or be refabricated at all? i would love to do the very same swap in my tezza here in cayman hopefully i can get my hands on a VVT-i 1jz sometime next year

Ok, after much consideration I've decided it is time to get rid of the gutless 1G-FE and jump on the 1JZ transplant wagon.
I have a question about the engine mounts. I see that people have had them fabricated in the past but was wondering if there is anyone who has tried using the the crossmember from a Gita wagon (2jz-ge)? Is the 1jz and 2jz block much different?
I'm guessing this is not possible, so my next question is can you now just purchase ready made mounts in either NZ or Aust? (or anywhere for that matter). I'm rebuilding a 1jz now, so if there's anyone out there planning something more extreme and has some mounts they're ready to part with, i love to know biggrin.gif

Have a chat to Brendon at A1 Turbos up here in Auckland, he has just completed a 1JZGTE conversion on an Altezza, he might be able to souce or make you more mounts that he used for the conversion

cheers for that, I'll give him a call about it. Am still unsure why the cross member cannot just be swapped for an IS300? Surely the IS300 and IS200 chassis rails are the same

Ahhh just had a chat to Brendon, he said it will cost around the 15K mark to get it done to the level to what his one is at.

They mounted the 1JZ further back to help distribute the weight of the car better, the front of the 1JZ sits roughly the same as the 3SGE, but lots of work was required like cutting the tunnel out etc and wiring was a nightmare apparently to get all the factory sensors and gauges to work

He told me to stick to the turbo 3SGE route instead LOL

Hmmm. $15K is a whole new car..lol

But I notice most doing this conversion are converting IS200 or AS200, I guess the 1G-FE is better suited (and gutless). I know things are a little different in the engine bays when comparing the two but structure wise they should be the same underneath.

As for mounts, I'm nowhere near ready for the transplant yet (engine is still coming together), so i have time to keep an eye out for some "already made" mounts coming up for sale or a rear ended Gita or IS300.

As for engine position, is the weight distribution that important? Im not going to be racing, drifting or dragging. This is just a daily driver project & for some fun at the lights cool.gif

Apprently so, the weight of it sitting on factory gita mounts made the car understeer lots even under normal driving apparently.

Will get pictures during the week and post it here, he could be keen to sell the car as is instead though

It would be really hard to justify such a conversion when the price of a IS300 isnt a great deal more then a IS200 these days.

I have seen a few low kay (50-60 kays) IS300's for sale in the mid $20K range.

IMO you would be best to sell your IS200 and get a IS300 instead of buggering around with a conversion...

Pics would be great, would love to see how the mounts were done.
But I wonder, could adjustable suspension counter the understeer problem?
I'm running a HKS setup currently which gives damper and height adjustments.

Also, do you know what 'box your friend went to?
I see quite a few people doing auto to manual conversions (with 1jz/2jz) often just go to a W series, even factory fitted auto 1JZ (chaser, soarer etc) conversion to manual and using W series.

The extra weight of the 1JZ made my IS200 handle like a bag of sh@t.

Problem was solved with Koni adjustable shocks and it ended up back with standard springs. Is now as nimble as my 2nd IS200 which is a stock auto version.

cheers for that, seems the W58 or R154's are the ticket but are pretty expensive (hate to think what the V161 set you back Graham).
I guess to be safe I will get some mounts made up too.
The factory soarer mount on intake side seems quite close to the oil-cooler/filter. Making mounts up to shift weight balance towards the rear is going mean the oil cooler might get in the way right? Did you have this problem Graham?
Also, mine is factory 4AT so doesn't come with torsen diff. I have read that Supra Torsen's dont fit?
Am I best to try and get my hands on a RS200 diff?

Looks like I am jumping on the 1jz bandwagon too with my AS200z. Any help or thoughts would be appreciated. Keep in mind, its a manual conversion as well.

Hey i was just wondering when u convert the 1G-FE in an is200 do u have to change the gearbox too? Does the 1JZ/2JZ bolt straight onto the J160 gearbox? I heard the gearbox (J160) is pretty weak and probs wont be able to handle the 1JZ/2JZ is this true?

Nope, the J160 will handle the power and torque but to a certain limit, but S15s seem to be ok with their boxes though? (Same gearbox)

Wonder if we can use the stronger S14 gearbox with our bellhousing?

There is also speculation that the J160 bellhousing isn't removable? Anyone confirm this?

Confirmed,

The J160 is a one piece front half, you'd have to replace the whole front half of the gearbox and we cant be sure that a S14/S15 rear half and internals will fit our front half. Also most likely the spline shaft length, position, and diameter would be different! Thats not taking into account gear shifter position, and gearbox crossmember position.

The cheapest option would be a W58 Remote Shifter box, and a suitable bellhousing for a JZ, otherwise the usual R154 or V160 boxes are the only way to go!

Hey Graham how much did the total conversion cost ya? Did u do it all yourself? I am thinking of buying a is200 and converting it down the track, how far down the track depends on how much it costs tongue.gif

Remember buys a conversion all depends on how much of the work you do yourself (fabrication, modifications, wiring etc) and what parts you use.

Expect parts alone to be around the $8000.00+ mark easy.

Or if you are to get someone to do it, probabaly around the $20000.00+ mark.

All depends on what you use etc (VVTI 1JZGTE/2JZGTE, R154, V160/V161, W58, Factory ECU, Standalone/piggyback etc etc etc)

Thats right depends on how far you want to take it how much you do your self.

Cheapest and best option would be the 1jz VVTI it's smaller then the twins with a bit more touque down low.

If your aims are over 300rwkw then 2jz with a single turbo setup. add $8-10k on top.

1jz NON VVTI $1400
1jz VVTI auto $1800
1jz VVTI manual $3000
2jz Auto $2500

2jz manual options
5 Speed R154 $1800
6 Speed Getrag $3500

Extra's
Clutch Setup $2000
Wiring $1000 or alot of your time
Tail shaft $600
Engine mounts
Exhaust $1500
Engineering $1000
Brakes $1200
Lines fittings
Fuel lines
fuel pump
Intercooler
Piping
