the palms casino resort
this hotel may be a mile west of the strip, but for many it is the heartbeat of las vegas. no other las vegas hotel better exemplifies the "what-happens-in-las-vegas-stays-in-las vegas" mindset than the palms, and the recent, long-awaited opening of the playboy club heralds a new beginning for mr. hefner's famous men's – now coed – club. like a hip-hop midas, everything the palms touches turns to fashion. the new tattoo parlor is another overt sign of this hotel's target market. although this place is far from fostering the elegance of the mandalay or wynn hotels, it provides dot-com dandies and millionaires of the mtv generation a place to call their own. a bit wild, racous and slightly decadent, it trumps the hard rock hotel with its un-family friendly environment: some rooms boast stripper poles and fully functioning bars. not only is that true, but the palms is owned and operated by the infamous esposito family. this is where a lot goes down - if you know what i mean.

lightning liquors
looking for your booze fix? lightning liquors has been the strip's biggest liquor store since 1967. complete with its very own 4000 square foot wine cellar, they have any kind of wine you could think of. but if you're not in the mood for wine, the shelves and walls are lined with over six hundred kinds of alcohol. vodka, gin, rum, beer, whisky, and cognacs are only of the few types they sell here. also, you can get your cigar fix here. we import cuban cigars, but be sure to keep that on the down low!

sahara hotel and casino
situated a long walk north from central strip action, this hotel has tried to reinvent itself. but all the money spent has merely resulted in a mixed metaphor: this is a place where nascar meets the casbah. it remains one of the hardest hotels in town to navigate, as it is inadequately signed and awkwardly designed. the main entrance sports an onion dome atop an 80-ft porte cochere, and stone columns, marble floors, stained glass, crystal chandeliers and mosaic tile dress up the lobby.

treasure island hotel and casino
under the same mgm ownership as its glittering neighbor, mirage, this hotel is doing a good job of honing its new, naughty edge, which helps bolster las vegas's "what happens in vegas stays in vegas" ad campaign. gone is this hotel's disneyfied pirates of the caribbean theme. these days treasure island is marching to a different tune entirely, with the trendy palms hotel in the role as the pied piper. the latter's popularity with hipsters and gen-x millionaires has fueled a fashionable, sex-tinged revolution that is slowly exorcising the strip of its kitschy cliches. t.i.'s new pirates have been transformed into s&m scallywags, with the hotel's t.i. sirens, (a nightly show staged at the entrance) comprised of a band of roughed-up, bandanna-clad versions of the pussycat dolls. staff has even cast away this hotel's once famous name, treasure island, replacing it with the epitome of rock-and-roll and rap status, a monosyllabic, gunslinger's label. here, t.i. rolls off the tongues of staffers like a hook in a chart-topping single. "welcome to t.i."

the mirage
this vast resort was one of the first to define las vegas' 21st-century aesthetic: sexy and cinematic—in this case with an erupting volcano. even in the face of the wynn, venetian, reworked caesars, mandalay and bellagio, this remains a bastion of high-octane luxury. the hotel rises from behind waterfalls cascading five stories off this fabricated volcano, which continues to blow smoke and fire 100 ft into the air as computerized lighting simulates flowing lava. the hotel's three 29-story towers are linked to create a distinctive y profile, and the white exterior is trimmed in gold, with lcd panels that create a unique 10-story marquis that is visible up and down the strip. like a mini-times square, the building beams self-promoting ads, which at inspection were all about love, the production.

caesars palace
this may be one of the older hotels on the strip, but it has kept up with trends over the past few years, adding new high-tech accommodations, a spa, superb shopping opportunities and celebrated dining. actually, with its bold roman theme in place since its inception decades ago, this is one of the pioneers of las vegas kitsch, though since the new millennium it is leaning more toward classy. over the years, much of the 1970s-inspired tacky roman flavor has been washed over with a more sophisticated theme, though one still undeniably roman. compared to the competition, this hotel is almost understated. only in vegas could this be said of a hotel with neo-greco-roman-hollywood decor, holograms, scantily costumed goddesses dispensing cocktails, sarong-clad masseuses, breast-plated roman soldiers standing guard, statues that come to life, and conveyor belts rolling tourists in from the street to the casino. grounds juxtapose abstract neon lighting with flashy domes, formal gardens and roman whimsy.

planet hollywood resort and casino
this mega-resort is a remake of a las vegas legend (elvis and priscilla were married here in 1967) that was imploded in 1998. the "new and improved" planet hollywood resort & casino (formerly known as the aladdin) continues to fine-tune its image, with the latest improvements bolstering its reputation as a key second-tier player in this consistent one-upmanship town. it certainly is overshadowed by the neighboring paris and caesars, but it surpasses bally's and the flamingo in the middle of the ranks. following the dismantling of its former arabian persona, its new digs are slowly being put in place. the plan is to develop the planet hollywood brand in the same way that the hard rock cafe engendered the hard rock hotel and position it as a home away from home for hollywood's celebrities.

mgm grand
this is one of the world's largest hotels, occupying four 30-story slabs of bright emerald-green glass rising over a veritable city composed of its lesser siblings: excalibur, new york new york and luxor. it is built on such a vast scale that guests without maps can wander around aimlessly for hours, wondering which of the hotel's nearly 100 elevators will take them to their rooms. nevertheless, it is also one of the most impressive of glitter gulch's glamourpusses, offering an astounding array of dining, entertainment and accommodations.

the hole
welcome to the headquarters of la cosa nostra. through a back alleyway behind the palms hotel and casino, into a shed, through the back door and underground, you'll find 'the hole'. when most people are taken here, they don't know where they're going. all they know is it can't be good. the hole is inhabited by the upper 'management' of la cosa nostra, and mob members are only permitted within the hole to be assigned to their next job.

training center
la cosa nosta's training center is probably one of the most interesting pieces of property they own. an abandoned catholic school, the place has been gutted from top to bottom and refurbished as a conditioning center. every new member of las cosa nostra must go through some sort of training to test loyalty. those with specific tasks, such as the hitmen or robbers, receive their technical training here as well as agility and deception. this is hell for most of la cosa nostra's newbies.

the vault
in the way back of the las vegas city hall, lie safety deposit 'boxes'. primarily occupied by corrupt officials and the esposito family, these cells house some of the most precious information in las vegas. la cosa nostra, under the name of the esposito family, occupies vault number 667. drugs, money, dead bodies... everything is rumored to be hidden in here but those who know what is inside do not speak of what goes on in the vault. most members do not have access to the vault, and those who do are only the most productive and trustworthy of all members. they receive guidance directly from the esposito family heads here and trasnfer it on to those who do not have access to the vault.

woodland park and recreational center
the one square mile of grass that can be found in the desert of las vegas! thanks to the wonders of sod and manmade waterways, las vegas is home to its very own 'central park'. on the east side is the boat house and lake, where for a small fee, you can rent a boat. on the west side are the children's playgrounds and a petting zoo. the main focus of the park has to be the $3 million government-funded recreational center, housed in the dead center of the park. home to an olympic sized swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts, indoor track, and weight training facilities, the building is used by most of the community
