here i am, dressed to massacre. Group: admin Posts: 132 Member No.: 1 Joined: 20-July 08	& THE MOON AND ITS PHASES! for the benefit of those of you who aren't particularly moon-savvy. NEW MOON Come now, everyone knows what the new moon is. It isn't a moon at all, really; it's when the moon disappears with a flourishing sweep of its midnight cloak, a vanishing act, and on the clearest night, you can't see a sliver of it in the sky. Darkness. Vacancy. And you take notice. This is the opposite of the full moon, obviously. CRESCENT MOON A crescent moon is part way between a half moon and a new moon, or between a new moon and a half moon, depending - either way, it's between the same moons, just getting bigger or smaller with each night. You know what the crescent moon is, I daresay; it's quite famous. HALF MOON / QUARTER MOON A half moon looks like half a circle, clearly, and it occurs twice during each moon cycle. (It'd be the first quarter and third quarter moons.) GIBBOUS MOON Here's one you probably haven't heard of (honestly - gibbous?), but you'll most likely have seen it. It's the phase between half moon and full moon, or full moon and half moon, depending. Basically the opposite of crescent moon, it's not quite full. FULL MOON You know this one, I know you do - how can you ignore it when it hangs suspended in the heavens, a perfect sphere, glorious and glowing? This is the moon at its most powerful, its most beautiful... and it's terrifying. During the nights of the full moon, hungry werewolves come out to play... and they crave human flesh. BLUE MOON This isn't necessarily a phase of the moon, strictly speaking, but it's what you call it when the full moon comes around twice in one month. The 'blue' moon would be the second one... as if once a month isn't enough. Ask your friendly neighborhood werewolf; I'm sure they'll agree. THE MOON CYCLE • NEW MOON • WAXING CRESCENT • FIRST QUARTER MOON • WAXING GIBBOUS • FULL MOON • WANING GIBBOUS; current moon • THIRD QUARTER MOON • WANING CRESCENT • && NEW MOON TERMINOLOGY WAXING - the progression of the moon's phases from new to full, as in waxing crescent, or waxing gibbous. roughly, it might be defined as growing. WANING - the progression of the moon's phases from full to new, as in waning crescent, or waning gibbous. roughly, it might be defined as shrinking.
