Well I recently read an article on IGN detailing who they thought the greatest anime characters of all time were.

Link to article

Sadly this list ends up as little more than a Shonen Jump all stars.

So I got thinking......who would I add?

And this is what I came up with...

Gai Daigoji(Jiro Yamada) - Martian Successor Nadesico

It isn't unusual in anime to have a character motivated by a dead comrade. It IS unusual when he dies in the second episode. Gai's death in the second episode is a motivating force through the rest of the series. His love and passion for Gekigangar III is still burning bright over 20 episodes after his untimely demise.

Sora Naegino - Kaleidostar

A true underdog. Sora is placed against some unbeatable odds and pulls though with a determination that won't quit. Try doing a lead's trademark trapeze act at the same time you are learning how to swing. Or stepping on stage without any rehearsal for a role on stage. This one packs an emotional ride that is well deserved.

Simon the Digger - Tengen Toppen Gurren Lagann

Even amongst anime character throwing galaxies during a final battle is unheard of. But not for Simon and Team Dai -Gurren they take combat to a whole new level. This is a character who comes from the most humble beginning of a tunnel digger to having the drill that will pierce the heavens.

Who would you add and why?

"Just who the hell do you think I am?" - Kamina

"Destiny. Fate. Dreams.
These unstoppable ideals are held deep in the heart of man.
As long as there are people who seek freedom in this life,
these things shall not vanish from the earth."
-Narrator, One Piece

"We're with the government."
"No thanks, We have all the government we need" - The Tick

"I have never let my schooling interfere with my education." - Mark Twain

You know it didn't even occur to me that they forgot Gurren Lagann, idiots...

Well let's see, take off Lelouche he is just a lame Light and put on Simoun

Take off Ichigo and put on Chiyo-chan

Take off Haruhi and put on Kyon

Take off D and put on Sailor Mercury

Take off Kaneda(they themselves admit he is nothing without his shirt and bike) and put on Keitaro

Take off Pikachu and put on Squirtle

Take off Rei and put on Horo

Flip Goku and Astro and you have a good list.

Though I'm not a fan of Kenshin, the Top 5 is golden. You have the icon of American fandom, the Mickey Mouse, the first commercial success in America, the icon of modern anime, and the icon of late 80s/early 90s anime. No changes there.

Light and L should be a double billed entry. Light is honestly the deeper, better character, but L is more iconic in fandom. For the same reasons I'd double bill Haruhi with Kyon.

I'd say the same for Shinji and Rei, but Rei is only so popular for fappin'. Bump Shinji, replace Rei with Lain.

Naruto should definately be a lot lower on the list, some where around Ichigo. I'd honestly remove both of them because, despite being popular, they're both fairly derivative.

Lelouche shouldn't be on there if only because he's too recent and, as I said with Ichigo and Naruto, a little derivative. The fact that the series has only been finished for a year or so is really important, because it's why I would vehemently defend not having Simon on the list despite Gurren Lagann having assured classic status.

Who would I add, though?

Char Aznabel. Alucard. Hitomi from Escaflowne. Noriko from Gunbuster. I don't know, the list's object is kind of way too broad to make a calculated decision.

I personally would have like to see:

Yūko Ichihara (from xxx Holic and Tsubasa series)
She possesses incredibly strong powers that shape not only the world that she resides in, but many others as well. She grants wishes to those who have them, assuming the compensation has the same magnitude as that of the wish. It almost seems as if she is the only one capable of understanding the masterworks of reality, constantly talking of how events are the result of "inevitability" and never of chance, and maintaining the balance of the universe. While in her role as the Dimensional Witch, she is often portrayed in a very stoic, business-like manner. However, she is also a lush, playful, and immature to the point of her employee Watanuki serving as almost a baby-sitter.

Roberta/Rosarita Cisneros/"The Bloodhound of Florencia" (from Black Lagoon series)
While not a primary character, the Maid of the Lovelace family is quite popular and for good reason. Her skills with various forms of weaponry, seemingly indestructible nature, and sheer determination make her more than a match for Roanapur's most seasoned residents. And if the third season will take up where the manga left off (with the "El Baile de la Muerte" arc), then her character will undertake a revolutionary turn, showing viewers what happens when the Bloodhound goes rabid.

I saw this on another forum. For the most part I'm fine with it.
