So a while ago I decided to make a simple game mock_up. Where being simplistic was key:
Keeping this in mind I decided to restrict my colours to 16 and tiles to 16x16.
All colours where hand picked by me.
I spent ages making the small things. Characters etc. But I feel it might be to simplistic?
And the result was this.

I've since improved the graphics thats in game at the moment and I ask.

Design wise whether I've gone over the top with game population(the water level at the bottom won't be in the game. I spent 5 minuts on itXD and I'm not pleased with it). What should I keep? What should I change.

I've gone over this thoroughly the last two days. Yesterday I decided to change what is there.
Also what are your thoughts on backgrounds? Are they needed?

I will update this later again.

Not at all, it's just beautifully stylized.
The first 3 mock-up screens (Tittle and two gray background ones) don't really need any changes. Backgrounds aren't necessary but what you have for the third mock-up works fine and is actually quite ingenious.

There are a lot of really clever design principles being struck on in these and it really sells the game, if it was made I would definitely give it a play based on graphics alone.

Thanks awesome.gif
I have since made a prototype of this project, but I've taken a break from it as someone asked me to create a flash game with them.

Anyway:
Link
Here's the prototype for interest sake.
<- and-> arrow keys for movement.
^ arrow key for jump.
z for speaking to people or pressing switches(no people as of yet, but there is a switch in the first level, actually its more of a black box as I haven't made the sprites for it yet)

This proto type contains;
A simple movement system.
A none working ladder!!!!Damn thing is pissing me off.
A room transition system that works well.(minor bug when jumping into transition lol)
and many many bugs!!

Its been a while Zeid.

Maybe make this into a flash game of sorts wink.gif
Easy to get a fair deal of exposure with flash games. If you make the game mechanics fun and addictive and the goals small it could be a great success. Just an idea though.

The prototype was obviously lacking content and playability but graphically there were some design problems to do with what looks like patforms and what actually are. Just thought I would mention it as graphics do have an impact on gameplay so it's important to use them appropriately and watch for such things.
