![]() Hey guys I know its not too good of me to post a WIP as unfinished as this but I'm having huge problems with color issues eg. deciding what colors to use and selecting nice colors for it as well so i asked my friend Piper what he would do and he showed me this :0 Piper has always been my inspiration for getting better and i finally got in touch with him again! ![]() I just don't see how he can select those colors so easily (I even watched him do it though a screen sharing utility called team viewer.. we use it alot for showing our friends things ) I saw him literally just pick colors with the greatest of ease ;( I cannot do that however.. i was wondering if you had any tips for me and Ill see about getting Piper to join this forum today as well ![]() Thanks for any CC you guys give me I am completely stumped on where to go with This one.. here's something what I wanted it to look like only i couldn't get the angle right so i settled for what I have. http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/16612.htm# Alright well.. I'm not officially going to call this one mine i just want to see if i got the color concept down and I need to work on my shading skills so it was made completely by me with reference of pipers but I don't claim this one i just want to know if i got the color concept down well enough? ![]() again I don't take credit for anything except the line art for this one and no its not a complete recolor i did do this pixel by pixel but like i said with a reference of my friend Piper's. I will try and make with my own style of shading or w/e tomorrow or later tonight thanks you This post has been edited by sk8erace1 on Jun 17 2009, 04:38 AM -------------------- GML expert and mentor

I think the best thing to do right now is to go ahead finish the line art, have a look at some anatomy guidelines and try to follow it as best you can. References do you more good than harm
Colour choice is hard to master, you need to know the theory(colour theory) work behind it and most importantly you need to practice! There's allot you need to keep in mind when choosing colours, what saturation you want, how bright you want it/what luminous you want(brightness and luminous are basically the same thing, different names), and what HUE(colour) you want, these terms are the basic terms used when choosing colours, there not hard to learn so go learn the definitions, but remember the final choice of colour is your own. Define Saturation Define Brightness/luminous Define hue Derek Yu After you learn those, Its important to learn how to make colour ramps. I started making straight ramps, which involves changing the saturation and brightness of a hue to make the ramp, very simple tbh anyone can do it, after which I moved on to Hue shifting, which involves changing the hue, saturation and brightness/luminous to make your colour ramp. I'll elaborate tommorrow after my interview. Mean while read this Link A good and interesting read! -------------------- |

I think your colours are different to his, credit is due for trying, the only problem you have is that you have a straight colour ramp, with very little contrast. Try hue shifting a bit. Another big problem is that you have allot of light sources, reduce it to one and shade accordantly, with no pillow shading, which is what both have you done! Here's an edit of Pipers version, he has a lot more contrast than yours, though his colour choices tend to be a bit desaturated. ![]() -Changed the light source to above the character -Reduced amount of colours ( Remember to use as smallest amount of colours possible, its a good practice for beginners.) I spend many hours refining my pallet, getting rid of colours I don't need, replacing a colour with another colour in my pallet that looks similar. -I also changed the hair, why? it was semi from the top and had a different perspective to the rest of the body. I used my knowledge of facial anatomy to do this. I suggest you go learn a few facial anatomy guide lines and use them in drawings etc. -What I want you to notice about the colours chosen Sk8 is that for every colour ramp there is a dark colour, usually near that blacks, a mid tone moving towards the yellow, and a brightest tone closest to the yellows. ( if your changing your colours and making your ramp brighter, try changing the HUE a bit more towards the yellows, if you change the ramp towards the darker colours, change your HUE's more towards the purples/dark blue's) A huge thing both of you should be doing is drawing, anything and everything (its actually fun, I have a small sketch book I take with me to college to draw in when I'm bored)! and learning guide lines. And I stress that I use the words "guide lines" as there there to help you have a better understanding of what your doing, but can be broken as there not set in stone, go wild and experiment.. -------------------- |

lol, ok first thing about the hair well he was supposed to have bangs which i couldn't get to look right and hes supposed to look kinda emotionless since he is a warrior. and about drawing.. well uh, yeah I cant even draw a straight line ;(
i don't think that would help in my or pipers case as he said he cant really draw that well either but anyways any suggestions on how to make the bangs look how i want them and about the color choices i did hue shift I hue shifted pretty much every color on there o.o and pipers not really a beginner though he used alot of colors for detail I guess? Thanks for the help edit: i noticed your using green and orange in the armor i don't think i get why you did that o.o?
