Standing at 5'9, Mafalda is and always has been a tall girl. She hit a growth spurt at age nine and quickly shot up even taller than most of the people in her class. She has always been teased for her height, but not so much now as when she was younger. At age thirteen she was easily taller than most of the boys her age, and to cope with their intimidation of her they choose to make fun of her and call her names. Her height is mainly attributed to her long legs. Due to being made fun of for the majority of her teenage life she has choosen to dress in clothes that don't show off her shape. She has low self-esteem and will probably never see that her body isn't one that she needs to hide away.

Some other odd features of Mafalda are her big lips and wide-spaced eyes. She has a much fuller top lip than most girls, and while some people seem to think that her lips are envious, a big majority of people just think they're too much. Her eyes are also bigger than most, but not big enough to draw a ton of attention. If anything about them draws attention it is how far apart they are set. She often refers to herself as looking froggish in the face and she always jokes about it, but it secretly hurts her feelings when other people point this out in a negative way. Though they are the two major things that set her apart from the other girls at Hogwarts, they are also the two major things she would change about herself if she could.

When describing Mafalda's hair one might say that it was long and blonde. Don't let the description fool you though, because the stereotypical long and blonde isn't anything like her hair. Mafalda usually wears her hair back in a pony-tail to avoid fixing it, but when she does let it down it tends to get knotted easily. She would have to brush it a dozen times a day to keep it from getting out of control, so when you see her it will most likely look like she just rolled out of bed. Her hair has no style or special cut, and she has never had the desire to dye it and most likely never will. Another characteristic of her hair is that it isn't the golden-blonde people usually imagine first, but a pale blonde. The paleness of her hair only helps to helps to further radiate her skin.

With her pale skin, frizzy hair, big lips, wide eyes, lack of style, and overall awkwardness it isn't hard to see why Mafalda is such an easy target for bullying. She doesn't have a confident stance or attitude and though obviously cute her classmates usually overlook her beauty and only see her as unusual looking. She definitely doesn't compete with the short, tanned bombshells that rule the school so don't be surprised if your compliments go unnoticed.

Mafalda's personality over the years has grown from shy, introverted, and lonerish to excited, friendly, and goofy. Ever since her mother started paying more attention to her, Mafalda has become a much more loving and caring person. She realizes how special the people in her life are and never wants to push them away like she did when she was younger. It only caused pain for her and others. She would do almost anything for a friend, and is very much the motherly type. If you are feeling down about something, even minor, she'll make stupid jokes or silly faces until you smile. She goes out of her way to make others feel good, and she enjoys doing it.

Of course Mafalda isn't always a ball of sunshine, sometimes she's just a ball of fire. If you rub her in the wrong way she has the ability to be rude, sarcastic, and snappy, but this happens very rarely. She hardly ever shows this side to her friends, unless something really bugs her. A lot of the time her friends find it funny to watch her get angry, but if they can tell she means business....well...it can get kind of scary too.

And then there are times when she is just plain depressing. Whether she wants to admit it or not, Mafalda has suffered some down-right sad things in her life. Growing up without a father, a mother she couldn't depend on, and no friends or family, the girl has some inner issues that get the best of her sometimes. There are times when she will be gloomy for days and nobody, not even her, knows why. It usually happens when people talk about family - specifically fathers. She isn't a nut case by any means, there is just a part of her deep down inside that is still a scared little 4 year old, home alone, with nobody to tuck her in.

There are multiple flaws in Mafalda's personality as well. She can become cold or stand-offish if she thinks she is starting to become too attached to a person. She can be very moody and seem mildly bipolar at times, but it is because she doesn't have a good hold on the person she is becoming yet. She hasn't learned to manage all of her emotions and at her age she is experiencing many that are new to her.

For the most part - Mafalda is your average 16-year-old girl. Her emotions are still a bit of a mess that she hasn't figured out how to control, and she is really just starting to figure out who she is and what she wants in life. It is a very stressful time for her, so she might surprise you!

Jaeleene Hopkirk was a very young girl when she fell in-love with an over-aged wizard, named Cyllubus Mortemor. Only 14 at the time, she had no idea that he was taking advantage of her. But, why else would a 26 year old be interested in someone so young? After only three short weeks Jaeleene got pregnant, and Cyllubus proved his worth when he left her. Mafalda Steavey Hopkirk was born eight and a half months later. Her father wasn't present for her birth, and to this day she has never met him. She has one picture and a name. That is all she knows about the man.

Mafalda wasn't raised in the best environment for the first seven or eight years of her life. Her mother was too young to know better, and often left Mafalda home alone while she went out to do other things with her friends. She never spoke much about Mafalda, because it was such a disgraceful thing to have a child and not be married, and rarely did anyone come around to see the young girl. She spent many nights alone, hiding under her bed, with a candle and a book. After teaching herself to read [she was enrolled in school very late for her age] Mafalda fell in love with books, and to shut out the real world around her she would often submerge herself in a fantasy one instead.

Eventually her mother snapped out of it, and around the age of 22 decided she needed to try being a mother. At first the relationship was strained, as Mafalda would much rather lock herself in her room and be by herself like she was used to doing. Over time though, Mafalda noticed her mother really was trying, and slowly started to give the young woman a chance. As their relationship improved so did Mafalda's marks in school. The girl came out of her shell more and learned to start making friends. Then the letter from Hogwarts came, and changed the lives of both these girls.

At first her mother thought it must be some sort of a joke, but it wasn't a joke at all. That good-for-nothing father of Mafalda's had actually given her something. He had given her magic. That sad excuse for a Wizard had granted Mafalda acceptance into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!

Her days at Hogwarts have been the best days of her life, and Mafalda has made a few of the greatest friends she could have ever asked for. Before Hogwarts, Mafalda hadn't known that she could have a complete family, but the love she received at that school made up for being so neglected as a child. She tries her hardest to continue to make top marks in all her classes, struggling to impress her mother, and has turned her love of reading into an even greater love - writing.

Now, in her sixth year at Hogwarts, Mafalda has no idea where her road goes from here, but the struggles in her life have only prepared her more for this road. She is ready to choose her path.

In all fairness, Mafalda hadn't gotten what she had been expecting either. She expected him to tell her that the reason that Ravenna might not like him kissing another girl was because she had a huge crush on him, and it would simply hurt her to witness such an act from the boy who had stolen her affection. It was a rather unrealistic reason for her to care if he kissed somebody, if they weren't dating, because it just didn't seem like the Slytherin girl to act in such a way - but they were obviously dating or they were planning on it. Mafalda still would have preferred that reason to the real one.

Standing there, she squeezed the rock in her hand tighter, hoping to maybe transfer all of her frustration into it. All of the emotions that went through this girls head were enough to drive a person crazy. Currently Ludo had managed to make her go from excited, to hopeful, to confused, to angry. It wasn't fair, but it wasn't his fault either. What was his fault though, was not telling Mafalda that he was interested in a girl, not mentioning Ravenna ever, not telling her that he had a date, and not caring enough to ask if she had one as well. Weren't best friends supposed to talk about these things? It seemed like the past couple of months had been strained between them. They weren't drifting apart, but there was something between them and it was keeping them from getting to each other. They needed to figure out what the problem was and fix it fast, before their friendship completely died. Mafalda felt like he was slipping away. It hurt her that Ludovic obviously didn't value their friendship as much as she did - at least, that's what she thought.

Well, to be honest Mafalda...you do sound pretty jealous.

Ouch. He had come right out and said it. It didn't matter that she had asked him in a messed up effort to play it cool, or that one thing about their friendship she loved was how he was so honest with her. Nope, those things didn't matter in the least. All she could think was... Ouch.

How did he expect her to respond to his question? You bloody idiot! I'm mad! We've known each other for two years, through a dozen dances, and you've never asked me even once! We can't even go as friends because of all the stupid girls in your life! What about me? Am I the only girl that you manage to overlook? Why? She wanted to tell him what she had just thought, but she knew that wouldn't solve anything. The only way to get out of this mess was to do what Ludo usually did to her. Lie about her feelings.

"I'm not jealous that you are going with Ravenna, Ludo. I'm upset that you got a date before me," she said, taking a deep breath of air and dropping the rock she was squeezing back on the ground. "I'm so much better looking than you, yet I'm the single one." Mafalda smiled, to show she was pretending teasing. Good job. Play it off. Make a joke. He'll never know. Too bad the tension was still so thick you could cut it with a knife.
