New World Academy had been founded centuries ago, during a dark time, when people were just starting to get their footing in America. They were traveling and seeking out opportunities from the New World. But disasters followed. Many deaths occurred over land disputes, towns were burned to the ground at night, hundreds died from sickness and lack of food. Many passed on, many more lingered the grounds.
In 1687, a student named Margaret Spade, 11 years old, had been passing through the Gazebo when she witnessed an older student, 16 year old Joseph Smitheson, become surrounded by what she called a "dark light". Margaret claimed that the light surrounded Joseph and entered him, then Joseph proceeded to take his pocket knife and stab himself 17 times. Margaret ran screaming from the scene and found the headmaster, when they returned, Joseph was dead, his pocket knife missing, and 14 deep slashes in his chest. Margaret was later admitted to St. Marie's hospital, three deep stab would in her heart and her eyes sewn shut. No one knows what happened to her.
Seven years later, Brendon MacCalister, 14, watched from the Inner Courtyard, a firing squad administer a final blow to a man in a suit that, from what Brendon said, looked to be out of place. When he later explained what he had seen, no one believed him. He claimed that the men were shrouded in shadows, but distinctly visible. In 1752, Brendon MacCalister died by firing squad in that very courtyard, his crime, heresy and demon worship.
1894, Professor Strada, of the charms department, claimed that she watched as something dark fill her classroom and enter her students. There were 12 students in the room, herself being a 13th person. All 12 students began to act out, slashing each other with their wands, muggle fighting and destroying everything in the room. Professor Strada only survived by sheer luck, as the students turned on her and attacked. When found, the students were asleep at their desks, and Professor Strada bleeding on the floor in the front. All students were taken to St. Marie's, 3 students were sentences to death, two hung, one pressed. Professor Strada retired that year and died when the last of her students died of Scarlett Fever .
In 1909, the entire boys dorm wing was over come with delirium, the girls were struck with typhus. With in a week, half of the student body died. On the full moon of the same month, all those that had died were walking the school, transparent, but of a mangled appearance. Once the mood passed on, all those that were still alive but sick, were alive and well, no sign of having ever been sick. But those that died, never heard of, their bodies mysteriously gone from the town morgue.
1959, Headmistress Alessa Tray was found brutally murdered in her office, all windows and doors locked from the inside. You would think in a magical school, that wouldn't be hard to do, except, as it is a magical school and the office was that of the Headmistress, it was severely heavily protected. No apparating or disapparating. And Alessa was murdered by ways of muggle killing, a deep gash into her left side, her stomach punctured.
