http://www.soccerway.com/news/full/index.p...area=1120217378ZURICH, July 1 (SW) – World football governing body FIFA has handed Seria A outfit AS Roma a one-year long transfer ban after they illegally approached and signed AJ Auxerre defender Philippe Mexes.
The France international broke his contract with Auxerre to join AS Roma a year ago, but AJ Auxerre manager Guy Roux, who was still at the reins of the Burgundy club at the time, had revealed the case was far from closed, the French club having brought the case to FIFA.
A six-week suspension had then been handed to Mexes by FIFA, but the football governing body was yet to hand its decision over the implication of the Seria A side.
It was confirmed today that Roma would need to pay a €8 million compensation fee to Auxerre, and would be banned from signing new players for the forthcoming term, having been found guilty of illegally approaching and signing the young ace.
The Italian side is now likely to bring the case to Lausanne’s Court of Arbitration for Sport, while the recent transfers of Bayern’s Kuffour and Monaco’s Nonda have yet to be officially confirmed by the governing body.
