Title: Starscream - Movie universe
Description: Ikariya's Starscream build Thread

Ikariya - March 2, 2010 08:10 AM (GMT)
Hi all,

I am about to take the journey to build another Movie universe character costume: Starscream! I conducted a poll earlier to decide to make SS, and have been at work researching ways that I wanted to construct the beast. I'm starting this thread after a night's hard work on the legs. I have most of it worked out in my head - pvc structure that is supported on my shoulder and hips. Arms may move by a long pole or some kind of interconnection system. I intend to make the digilegs an illusion so I can actually walk normally. I have tons of pages of diagrams drawn, 3d models for reference and tons of images to work off of.

What:
Huge robot costume. Approximately 7 feet tall and 7-8 feet wide. Fully articulate arms, legs and possibly face. I'm doing the Revenge of the Fallen version with the tatoos painted on (just in case he doesn't have them next time I can paint over it)

How:
Foamcore, wood, hotglue, paint, nothing too heavy.

Goal:
Wondercon at the beginning of April
(backup goal - Fanimecon in May)

Time:
1 month (OMG super cram time)

Sorry for no pictures, but I've been working on it so no time to snap pix yet. Aiite! Cheers! Here's to the ride!

Here's my basic design showing how large he will be compared to Jazz. You can also see how I intend to get over the digilegs with an illusion.

My floor after a night's work on the lowest part of the leg. Woohooo!

Week1 update: Legs basicly done. Unfortunately it's raining in california so I can't paint them. Moving on to the torso and arms this week!

Remember, all-text and no-picture work logs don't fly here, so don't forget to take some good pix.

Good luck on this monstrosity -- I'm glad you chose his tattooed form (love it) and I look forward to seeing it completed!

Man, judging by your Jazz and Frenzy, I've faith that this will come out awesome. Can't wait for pix.

NatsumeRyu - March 2, 2010 11:38 PM (GMT)
This will be amazing, and your mention of the width of this costume only confirms that Starscream is a Dorito and that is why he is shorter than Prime. :ph43r:

Considering your past work, I'm certain this will be a product to be amazed at. Even more so you're only giving yourself a month to work on it. Still you know what you're capable of, and I'm totally looking forward to this! :)

That's what I was going to say! XD

Anyway: Good luck with getting Screamer done XD

Hi All,
Unfortunately I'm behind schedule and the legs took almost two weeks =T now onto the torso, arms, feet and head.

Legs finished (pretty much) I took both sides so you can see the inside and outside of the legs.

Kudos for doing this intricate character. This is gonna be awesome.

The legs are beautful. <3 It looks like you have a joint in there; mind if I ask what you use?

You and LionBoogy are inspirations to me

Ikariya - March 15, 2010 05:23 AM (GMT)
For the joint, I went to Home Depot and looked all around for any flat steel bars with holes in them in the hardware section and found a couple with holes all up and down. I then went over to get some screws and nuts that fit nicely along with some washers.

I gotta say steel really is tough because it was really difficult to cut the bars up with my jigsaw. I then hotglued them all into the legs. I need to put some cushions in there for my pants later because I didn't really sand the edges enough...

It's meant to be like one of those walking braces people need for broken bones etc. where the joint is exactly where the knee is.

A small update:
Unfortunatley for the weather and lots of working, I haven't been able to keep my schedule the way I wanted to. I am about 50% done though! Here's a preview on the torso parts I was able to work on so far.

The silver armor parts are mostly made, but putting them in the correcct order and placement on such a large project is proving taxing. Painting each individual part has also been difficult in the sporadic rains we've been having in California as well. More updates as I can build more!

Since I can't make my Wondercon goal, I'm shooting for Fanimecon at the end of May. That'll be about 7 weeks more work into the suit.

Some progress over the last few weeks. Work's been hitting me hard, and some setbacks on the suit have been discouraging. This morning, I woke up to it storming outside and lo and behold, one of my back panels was sitting out in the rain. One of the wings were also smashed by the garage door =T

Otherwise - As you can see from the huge photo, SS is ginormous. The middle parts and the head section are definitely next while I dream up how I'm going to design the arms...

NatsumeRyu - April 21, 2010 08:34 PM (GMT)
This is looking so awesome.... Mine's huge too, but nothing quite like this. So you use PVC as the frame - is that only while building, or is it permanent?

I can't imagine - how will you take SS places? Does he detach into smaller halves or something? :?

 Sorry, I don't want to take all yours secrets or anything, just always curious. :P

MegaGirl1 - April 21, 2010 11:49 PM (GMT)
Holy flying doritos! That's HUGE! I agree with Natsume....inquiring minds think alike.

Pilot - April 22, 2010 01:12 AM (GMT)
SO EPIC

Ikariya - April 22, 2010 11:08 PM (GMT)
Yes, its' pvc. Being so, it can collapse down into manageable size pieces. Heck, if I wanted I could take the whole frame apart and all I'd have to take is the pipes and the panels. Its more or less designed to fold up. Now getting the head and arms and legs to do it is the problem XD. My car should probably be able to get all the stuff in it.

MegaGirl1 - April 23, 2010 11:17 PM (GMT)
Yeah, good luck with that. It was hard enough being able to transport my son's G1 Starscream suit with everything else that went with us for the vacation when we did our Convention travel last year. I made it so his broke down and folded up and most of it fit into a king size bedding bag (which we broke on Halloween, so I got to find another one! LOL!)

Ikariya - July 3, 2010 07:42 PM (GMT)
Unfortunately not much progress due to work =( I DID get a copy of Leader class Starscream the toy today, so progress should continue. As for Botcon 2011, I reserved my hotel already so he should be coming!!!!

NatsumeRyu - July 3, 2010 08:03 PM (GMT)
Alriiiight! So I WILL get to see this costume! SCORE! Movie Starscream and Brawl are gonna give G1 Jazz a run for his money. :D

*dances excitedly*

MiraiBaby - July 3, 2010 11:41 PM (GMT)
Oh, goodness me .... I have G1 Jazz and Animated Lockdown coming. Strange crossovers ensue.

Lookin' forward to seein' you!

Firebird67 - July 4, 2010 02:08 AM (GMT)
Well and Swindle will be there...and if I can get him started and finished by then, maybe Octane.

Laserbot - August 15, 2010 08:14 AM (GMT)
OMG the leg idea pure genius! and its looking Awesum!! cant wait to see compleeted!

Ikariya - September 12, 2010 01:58 AM (GMT)
Alright, I haven't been on here in a while.
Progress so far: Main body llittle progress.
Head I found the papercraft version and I blew up the pattern 400%. The plan is to use the papercraft as a base, then bring up the accuracy to fully articulated mouth and accurate plating. August heat shuts my brain off, so there hasn't been much progress, but its still chugging to the deadline!

I should be able to get it out to Fanimecon for a testrun before Botcon =)

I3ooI3oo - September 12, 2010 07:37 PM (GMT)
That's awesome. I can't wait to see it finished.

MiraiBaby - November 15, 2011 12:22 PM (GMT)
This costume has been completed for some time.

Updating with images for Ikariya -- I LOVED seeing him and his friends at BotCon 2011!
