Okay, so here's this to help me better keep track of what parts are going to be connected to each other and considered "one piece" and stuff:

GENERAL MATERIALS

user posted image

Just 3 different kinds of metallic stretch lycra/spandex: black, gunmetal, and dull silver. I was pretty amazed to find the silver that I did... I was expecting to have to make do with some really shiny, tinfoil looking stuff, but I'm glad I didn't. The pale parts of the armor are almost a shiny/metallic aluminum white; it's more dull in some screencaps I'm finding, some whiter, some shinier-- I think this is as good a middle ground as I'm going to find.

HELMET

user posted image

Yeah, this is a better version than what I had before.

After a lot of tweaking, cleaning up of the shapes, and adding the respirator hoses:

user posted image

I cut the helmet entirely in half, actually, so that I could make sure that I was only going to be using the good side as a pattern. I just mirrored it for the other half and drew over it to make sure that, when it's complete, it'll be the silhouette that I want.

Juuuust about done:

SHOULDERS

user posted image

Okay, so this is how I'm doing the shoulders this time. I know keeping huge pieces or armor like this supported on such a weird joint usually proves to be extremely problematic, but I thiiiink I've got it. That piece coming out of the bottom there is going to have a strap that wraps around my upper arm, and the upper arm armor will slide over that (as the third photo shows).

user posted image

Here's a shot of the inside. I cut out a circle with the same diameter as the shoulder and folded it in half to make a wedge that will act as a support so the sphere will hold its shape and provide an anchor point for the strap piece.

^Basically done, just got to put in a closure for the wrist since it's too skinny to fit my hand through without opening some.

BEAM CANNON
This is going to be a bitch.

This'll have to be made differently than the rest of the costume... probably paper/cardboard and resin anyways. Yikes. It's a good thing I live near some parks, I can probably go sand over there. I'll be covering it with something different as well. In fact, I may just go ahead and paint the damn thing. Fortunately, I managed to acquire some of these from table decorations at a birthday party a couple days ago. I will be using one to light up some minor strips (the yellow/orange ones on the top) on the cannon, and I may use the other to light up the chest. There's 24 per strand and battery pack, so that means 6 per light feature.

WAIST

Omg, I hate this thing.

user posted image

Took me SO LONG to get the form right, just so I could draw the pieces on it and then cut it up again. asdjhdsfg. If you wanna know what the hell is going on with the design, there's a 360 degree view of it on the 4th design link. So many weird shapes and layers, my god. Oy.

4.5.12: Yeah, this just isn't going to work. Not only is it stupid to work with (and easy to mess up), it's not necessary! I'll be using this pattern and tut I linked to in the Printables subforum, and will be superimposing thin pieces of craft foam on top/painting it for that swirling effect instead. All of that planning up there just resulted in a freakin' waist tube and wasted foam. I guess Occam's Razor applies to cosplay too!

...okay, I suppose it doesn't. This shape took TONS of finaggling, but it fits like a glove which is what I apparently am going to need.

Oh samus! Nice! I saw a samus costume about 3 years ago here at a con I was at, it looks very nice, can't wait to see you do one!

@Fixy: Unfortunately, no... no point, especially if I don't have the hair to go with it. ;P

PS- added a couple sketches under mock-ups.

This costume is back on schedule!

Fabric has been purchased! :D

I'll be buying foam and pads of paper when I get back to NYC so I can start making mock ups again. (I had to throw all my old ones away during the unexpected move last august.)

Talon4ce - July 9, 2011 10:20 PM (GMT)
This looks so bitchin!

Jump - July 10, 2011 08:49 PM (GMT)
I guess that we both are going to be working really hard until NyCC, huh?

Pilot - July 11, 2011 04:34 AM (GMT)
I actually made most of the patterns and designs last year, and it really wasn't that difficult. The only hard things are going to be the shoulders, cannon, and torso lights. The actual armor is going to be a breeze for me. But we'll see. ;B

Oh, I had just got back into Transformers last year, so would have never thought to this kind of stuff. So far, no one I know off the net knows of the costumes to the full extent, so that makes me want to work harder on them. I wish us both the best of luck.

Pilot - July 11, 2011 06:06 PM (GMT)
I look forward to taking some pictures together. :]

Foam samples arrived, and will be going with L200 minicel foam~ It's only $22 for a 6x4' sheet!

(Also concluded that polyethylene minicel foam is identical to craft foam!)

My friend Matt also offered to make me all of my LED setups (lights, wires, plugs, battery packs, and switches) free of charge and to ship them to me! Fff!

Jump - July 24, 2011 06:52 PM (GMT)
Wow, I'm trying to find a way to scan out of my sketch book, so I'll start as soon as I can on my costume! I also have a surprise one for day 3...

Pilot - July 29, 2011 04:08 PM (GMT)
Updated lots of stuff! Mostly plans; some mock-ups too.

I think I'll work on the arms today~

NatsumeRyu - July 29, 2011 10:23 PM (GMT)
YAY INSPIRATION.

Yay for progress images!~ It's so cool to see this finally getting built, even in [new] mock ups. Keep the pictures and progress comin' Pilot! :D

And beautiful work on the worklog setup so far for keeping it organized and pretty. It was like goin' through a brand new worklog just now. :)

Pilot - August 12, 2011 12:17 AM (GMT)
Thanks, Nat! I like keeping these things SUPER organized because I usually come back and look at what I did when I'm working on something else, and I hate not being able to find something that I know exists on here. :B

Helmet WIP uploaded~!

I'm gonna start -gulp- making the beam cannon. Got me a buncha cardboard, let's see what I can come up with... >>;

I'm not sure if this is a little off topic or not (sorry if it is!) but the bit with the black strips on it look like the outline of a swan, maybe possibly.

You are so cute. <3

Added wip pic of the cannon. >w>;

@Zon: Haha yeah! It actually reminds me more of something really, really obscure... the "space chicken" sculpture from The Sims. ;3

Now for the REAL question...

Samus/Devcon, or Samus/Lockdown?

DUN DUN DUNNN

MiraiBaby - August 13, 2011 07:18 AM (GMT)
I'm rather scared to know what Samus/Lockdown might imply.... XD

Also, that cannon is effin' gorgeous. <3

Pilot - August 15, 2011 01:47 AM (GMT)
Shoulder WIPs added as well as my first partial body shot!

The cannon looks a little big (it's a bit on the large side), but the way the other pieces are tilted and stuff makes it look a bit bigger too.

Pilot - August 20, 2011 11:53 PM (GMT)
fff bought the laquer spray paints today at Hobby People. Sigh... the green I was getting for the bulk of the beam cannon looks a little too green, and from the look of the cap, which is supposed to be really accurate, it has flecks of gold in it, and the website swatch made it look as though it had sliver instead. So to play it safe, I bought a can of silver too (Diamond Dust), just in case I need to lightly mist the green after all. Stupid expensive paints.

I also went and fished out some of my citadel paint pots so I can add a little wear and tear to the paint around the cannon's edges, too. Man, I can't wait to get back and work on this...

Kupsbiggestfan - August 21, 2011 01:15 PM (GMT)
Looking Cool Pilot! :)
You clearly know more than me!
Each of us has a gift and yours, like mine is creativity! :)

Pilot - August 27, 2011 03:44 PM (GMT)
Okay, major-ish update: Added 4 completely new design sketches (and another something in that category), waist, and helmet. Woo~

Pilot - August 27, 2011 11:10 PM (GMT)
Finished leg mocks. I'm running out of stuff to pattern while I wait for my foam to get here. >:I

NatsumeRyu - August 28, 2011 03:23 PM (GMT)
Mock ups are lookin' amazing. :]

Kupsbiggestfan - August 30, 2011 12:27 AM (GMT)
Great cosplay pilot! I have a question. what pattern did you use to make the shoulders and how could the pattern be adapted for me to use for the shoulders and elbows for my Kup cosplay? i think if adapted right, it'll work just right for the shoulders and elbows. :)
otherwise, i'll have to:
A.) Buy four kids playtime balls the right size and cut holes in them and stuff them with polyfill
B.) Buy styrofoam balls and carve them out
