Since I'm also big into steampunk, I decided I'd draw inspiration from one of my favorite Transformers Cybertron characters: Vector Prime.

I've since decided to go with a more feminine version... so will be going for a skirt and blouse combo... but will still be steampunking it up... ;D I'll still leave my original idea up, as a comparison to the new idea, as well as the original project details. New project list will be linked here.

Costs:
-Burgundy and gold Sari fabric: 1.5 yards $15 (I think.)
-Gold lining material: 1.5 yards $5 (I think)
-Burgundy lining material: 5 yards $10 (... Again, I'm guessing here)
-White suiting material: 5 yards $30 (I should prolly try and find the receipt.... sleep.gif;; )
-Clockface buttons: $1.99 for 6 (only used 4)
-Brown pants: $2.99 at a thrift store
-cream button-down shirt: $.99 at Goodwill
-Vest pattern (Free on BurdaStyle)

What all will be going into this project:
-White sports coat or tailcoat (custom made) (in progress, in fact)
-Burgundy and gold vest (custom made) (finished this)
-Pink Fez (again, custom made) (in progress-ish)
]-Brown pants (Thrift store)
-brown and teal cape (custom made)
-brown boots (already have those)
-cream button-down shirt (thrift store)
-gold bow-tie (custom-made) (in progress)
-gold pocket watch (gifted by a very generous gentleman)
-Swords (still in the planning stages)
-possibly some spats of some sort (will make if I do decide to use them in the outfit)

ahvcuenderg THIS COSTUME. Vector Prime's design has always begged to be steampunked, and who can't appreciate a good brocaded vest?
Do you have a sketch or design you're going off of, or are you going at it by ear?

For the most part, I'm winging it. I know the general look I want to go for, and what my sewing skills are. Which is why some of the core pieces are goodwill finds. Best part about winging it is that if I do decide to change it up a bit later on down the road, I can.

So I decided to shake things up and make my Steampunk Vector Prime outfit as a skirt and blouse combo... I'll be using Late Bustle Era patterns from Truly Victorian, and getting help with some of the construction from people in my steampunk group who have experience with that sort of thing, since I'm still relatively new at the whole idea.

Materials and costs for new purchases:
-Duck cloth ($10 a yard) $20
-quilter's cotton ($4.99 a yard) $4.99
-Gold lame bias tape $1.30
-Grommet pliers $8

Things Already on hand:
-Spring Steel boning (from my last corset attempt (botcon 2011))
-busk (also from that corset)
-Lacing bones
-Grommets
-Corset lacing
-White bias tape (makes for good boning channels!)
-thread
-needles
-scissors

Worklog:

Corset
Underthings
Skirt
Bodice
Coat
Hat
Other

Corset

Since I have a body shape where off-the-rack corsets will not work, I'm drafting my own corset pattern. Or rather, in this case, I'm taking a corset pattern I had already drafted, and am improving upon it, so it fits better. I'm doing this by taking the half of the BotCon 2011 corset that didn't get signed and using the pieces to make a better-fitting pattern for this outfit.

Now I just have to wait until after I've gotten the hotels for BotCon paid off so I can buy all the patterns I need for the skirt and blouse... I'm also getting a hat pattern and undergarnment patterns, only 'cause it'll make things easier on me in the long run. Truly Victorian has some beautiful patterns... only problem is, I'm having a hard time narrowing down which ones I want to use.

Tomorow, the 20th, I'm going back to my parents' for a bit to pick up a few things. I'll be bringing the sewing machine back up with me, and looking into getting it repaired so I can sew the main components of the outfit.

I've narrowed down the patterns I want to use to the following:

Underskirt
Overskirt
Bodice
Hat

Debating about cuffs and collars, and still deciding on whether I really want to go authentic for underthings too or not...
